No. Other than the list of "frequently used words", there is no prescribed list of words. That would be isolating spelling, which we don't do. It is incorporated within all subjects. It's not isolated in the POS or in the Progress Report.

Is this a new FCPS thing? My child got words last year in second grade but I haven't seen any yet in third (but I was assuming that was because it was only the first week).

I would certainly give it more than a week--after all, this wasn't even a full week.

No. It's not new. If teachers are giving spelling lists and tests, they are probably doing so because they've always done so. That's not a bad thing, it's just not something that has to be done. in my school we were told not to do it that way when a school wide spelling plan was developed. Teaching a particular spelling pattern on a weekly basis doesn't really fit the POS/pacing from third grade up. I don't know about grades k-2.

For those who get lists, is the same list given to the whole class? Are all of the words ones your child needs to learn and after your child studies those words are they used correctly in writing? This is where I consider spelling into a grade. We do a lot of writing. As the students work through the writing process their spelling is evaluated. Are the frequently used words spelled correctly in their drafts? Do they use known spelling strategies when writing? What does the student do when editing not only their own work, but also the work of a peer? For example, after a child drafts is he able to recognize words that need to be corrected? If so, does he attempt to correct them and if so, how? Does he seek out the help of a peer? The word wall? A dictionary or spell checker? When I have a writing conference with the student, then it's a good time to go over the spelling of words were misspelled.

Isn't that called writers workshop and there is still a thing called word study which is more like spelling? I thought word study was still a list or words. There is a lot that goes into writing and children's spelling level isn't really accurate when they're focusing on ideas and sentence formation. In addition, I rarely see my child's words corrected in writing. It's not just about evaluating the student when they're writing. A student actually has to learn how to spell words correctly and learn various phonics rules and word roots.
