What happens at back to school night if children aren't invited?

Plus, my 7 year old will completely freak out with a new person...

Wow.

I see this at our school... and I love it.
I love to see the multi-generational families active and engaged, plus our school has PTA meetings with translators from numerous languages...
matter of fact...last year's initial PTA meeting started off with the Prez asking how many different languages are spoken here...
It was a mini U.N.
Love it!

pp here - I just ignored that part of her post because I wasn't even sure how to respond to that! Soooo, money raised by the kids or parent donations from last year should fund your babysitter for back-to-school night?

It would cost very little to hire a few student teachers to entertain the kids (probably @50 kids?) in the gym at school. It would feel safer than leaving them at home with a stranger since they would be nearby us in the classrooms. Not everyone has a nanny who they can just ask to do it--nor do we have family in the area for this.

KAH provides childcare at most of our PTA meetings...cannot remember about BTS

Then one parent stay home and the other go or use care.com or enlist in another parent that will be staying home or find a local high schooler that babysits or a friend with a kid in a different school (different back to school night date) and swap babysitting. There are many, many options. You can do it, Nemo!

Yeah, no. We have 3 kids in one school; one parent cannot go to visit all the classrooms…Plus, my 7 year old will completely freak out with a new person and 2 hours of babysitting for multiple kids is @$80. Too expensive--I'm bringing my kids. hire a teacher to entertain the kids in the gym for a couple of hours. This is what I pay PTA dues for.

OMG! Compainers are the worst. Okay - Nemo, here's the deal: Many of the schools do 2 session (one right after the other that same night) for families with more than 1 kid or when only 1 parents can go and they have more than 1 kid. If your 7yo freaks out with a new person (I assume you mean babysitter) than you have some additional issues to deal with because a 7yo should be able to handle a new babysitter. They get a new teacher each year, new coaches/instructors for outside activities, etc. Do you literally never leave your DC and go out without them? Also, I have had a babysitter watch 5 kids before for a few hours and didn't pay that much. You are being dramatic! We pay $15/hour for 2 kids and that's considered pretty high for this area. I always round up if only for a few hours and usually give more anyway because I want to make it worth their time to say yes even when it's short notice. Finally, your $15 PTA dues do not cover babysitting your kids when you are perfectly capable of getting a babysitter on your own. WOW, just WOW!You are an extremely high maintaince mom!

For back to school night for Kindergarten at our school - you were not supposed to bring children. I am a single mother and I found someone to watch my child. However, many many families brought children and it was not only distracting but also very crowded when we visited the classroom. I know at our school the after care program offers to take care of kids on site for a small fee during upcoming back to school nights. I'm sure other schools do the same so PPs might want to check into that.

At our school KAH babysits for free at PTA meetings (cost is probably covered by the PTA), and KAH charges $4 for childcare during BTS Night.

At our Title 1 school, many parents bring their children and it is not a big deal. The little ones may get a bit antsy, but we are glad many families are able to participate.

I am wondering if elementary schools are going to partner with the feeding high school and have students from that school babysit

I’d rather have this than what we get. Maybe 3-4 parents show up. What a waste. Ours is on Thursday night and it’s an exhausting 12 hrs at school for a few parents.

Yeah, you've failed as a parent if you've gotten to this point.

Nope. Not happening. BTSN has been going on for decades and people were able to figure it out. It's not rocket science if you have 2 functioning brain cells.

I just skip it. When I go, I’m always sorry I spent the energy and money.

Our school offered school aged childcare and the. In the evening there was an ice cream social hosted by the PTA and kids were playing in the playground

It would be better to partner with the aftercare company since they are vetted more than a random high school student trying to earn SSL hours. Our school does use Middle or high school students to do things like face paint at school events or help with translating or help families navigate around the building
