$50 for one person for a week is a hardship? Maybe if you don't cook and don't know how to boil water.
When I was in college and blow all my money on a cute outfit my grocery list was: Peanut butter Eggs Tuna fish - store brands are less than a buck a can. Ramen noodles, 12 for under 3 bucks. Sodium, yummmm Bread Rice Pasta Potatoes, zapped in microwave with sour cream or butter or cream cheese Veggies and fruit in season. All for around 30 bucks. As long as you're not big on meat, you'll do fine. |
| If you shop at Safeway be sure and look at their app/ online club card access-- you can get way better priced that way bin just got a coupon at checkout there for $10 off my next purchase of $10 or more. |
Too bad my teleporter is broken. However Grass Fed burgers are on the menu for tonight's cook out-refugees who have a working teleporter are welcome. |
Do you like living your life in total selfish oblivion? Feels good, does it? |
2 of those days, you should fast. No carbs. Just eat some protein like 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast. Skip lunch, and eat a sald with some nuts for supper. |
I think posters have demonstrated that one can eat perfectly adequately, even well, on $50 a week. No need to fast. Why would you suggest this?

OP here. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I think I'm going to go with these ideas:
Breakfast: a poached egg on whole wheat, coffee, fruit Snack: A few pieces of cheese and a low sodium V8, water Lunch: PB and J on whole wheat or a hummus roll up on a tortilla (with cheese and lettuce), fruit, and a yogurt. Dinner: I'm going to go with the roaster chicken idea. That'll give me at least three meals (one night can make a chicken quesadilla using the tortillas), and fortunately I have some frozen cod in the freezer which I can pan fry for two other dinners. I'll have rice and beans and/or veggies on the side each night. Treat: I'll make a brownie mix and freeze them individually. To the posters who said I should comparison shop, it's an otherwise good suggestion, but I don't have the time, transportation, or impetus to do this. I'm a teacher and every moment away from the classroom counts. I know I can do this; it's not too difficult and I should be doing it ALL the time. Sometimes it's just too easy to grab a $10 salad from Sweetgreen after work, you know? And to the grass fed beef poster and fasting poster: thanks for your valuable contributions. Sincere thanks to all of you for your inspired suggestions. I'm going to bookmark this thread and refer to it often. |
If you have pantry staples (flour, sugar, oil) on hand, this is awesome: http://www.instructables.com/id/Mug-Brownie/ I generally cut the recipe in half; it's actually pretty huge. And I am not a shrinking violet when it comes to eating desserts.

| 3 dozen eggs for one person for six days? What? |
That's what I was thinking... WTH? I mean, it's good to have eggs in the fridge but please. |
Eating too much eggs is bad for you. Cut down on that! |
Do you mean too MANY eggs? The PP's were referring to a poster who recommended by three dozen eggs for a week. IMO it's fine to eat one egg a day. |
| * sorry BUYING, not by |
| Nah, eggs are good for you. One egg, three egg whites makes an omelet with spinach and maybe mushrooms if you splurge. Yum! |
