Me too. I was all excited when I got the book at my shower, then I read it and was like, "Why do people love this so much?" I didn't read it as a kid so maybe I would've felt differently but this book just makes me sad and mad at the main character.

I hate The Giving Tree, too. I'm also not crazy about Goodnight Moon!

I haven't read The Melendy Family, but I loved Elizabeth Enright's two Gone Away Lake books! I can't wait to read them to my child.

I would write a note and stick it inside the book instead of writing directly on the book. Some of the books we got at our shower were Madeline, The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, The Berenstain Bears, 10 Apples Up on Top by Dr. Suess, a picture book about Rosa Parks. Things that people loved when they were kids or loved reading to their own kids.
