Why is being liberal a bad thing?

Thanks for proving my point by mentioning our grandparents' generation. They're probably the last generation to be able to survive on a pension.

1404-

maybe-

but my point was the preponderance of liberal academics who are afraid of speaking the truth about the Chinese government b/c they still want access and to be able to visit the country-

both of which has been limited to academics who have spoken the truth about the brutality of the regime

Jesus Christ.

Not as an epithet, but as a model for your politics.

Huh?

Jesus turned water into wine... so he wasn't against alcohol.

And he was VERY lenient towards the woman who was a (sexually promiscuous) prostitute, right? Everyone else wanted to stone her, he just said, leave her alone unless you are prefect yourself. Pretty forgiving, there. I don't recall reading Jesus thought anything pro or con towards abortion. But I could have missed it. Death penalty? He willingly submitted TO it, didn't protest against it.... don't recall him saying anything against drugs, either for that matter.

Jesus was not telling anyone to be promiscuous. As a matter of fact, he considered it a sin.

Well, he considered adultery a sin. I don't know if he ever weighed in on promiscuity.

Do you have all day? The list in never ending. But the worst reason for being a liberal is simple. Liberal = Victem. And that is the absolute worst personality trait anyone could possibly have.

You mean victIm, right?

Poor spelling, while not a bad personality trait, has a negative effect of one's ability to communicate effectively.

You is right on, man. I aint no victem. I's voted for George W. Bush twice (three times if you's counted the extra ballot I sent in after the deadline in Florida in 2000 when Joe Lieberman said I should. Now he's a real American.). Don't misunderestimate what I'm saying to you. Libruls ain't nothing but commies and what's that word, socialists.

Since two others jumped on your typos, I think you deserve at least one response to the substance of your comment.

Rather than being victims, many of us are reasonably well off, some even spectacularly so. Furthermore, many of those who are truly victims of our society consider themselves to be conservatives because of their "values". It would be more accurate to say liberal = concerned about victims. And I would submit that such concern is a much more admirable personality trait than the selfish "I managed to do well so I have no sympathy for those who can't" outlook of some who call themselves conservative.

"I agree with previous posters-most of my most liberal friends are incredibly close-minded and think that if you live in a rural area or believe in God you are stupid. Of course they also believe they are the most intelligent and know more than anyone and any one who disagrees with them is basically uneducated and unintellectual."

I have pretty mellow friends on both sides. I think the stereotypes of liberal =too brainy and conservative=too dumb stem more from the basis of which both sides form their opinions on social issues.

Social conservatives start from religion which is about faith. There is no point in overintellectualizing this because well religion is faith and not proven by arguments but strengthened by belief. The followers are not dumb they simply do not feel the need to rationalize across the spectrum and to an extent they already have a doctrine in place.

Social liberals start from a secular more intellectual base looking at soceity and people. Any position that strives to improve the conditions of soceity and extend freedoms through the application of government principals and constitutions is enhanced by deeper intellectual thought and arguments both in creating support and in practice. Social liberals or progressives are also in the position of adapting their doctrine based on the current and projected conditions within soceity.
