pregnancy weight gain

I gained a lot with my first, and really do not think I changed my eating habits at all! So much about pregnancy changes and challenges the body. It is a hormonal, metabolic event! Your hormones change, the way your bones connect to muscles change, you swell, etc. So why would anyone in the world think that the way your body digests, processes, divvies up, gets rid of, and hangs onto caloric intake wouldn't change dramatically?

Additionally, the woman often changes the way she exercises. In the first trimester, people slow down some due to nausea or deep fatigue. Some believe that is nature's way of slowing us down further to help divert all the extra energy from calories toward padding on maternal fat reserves that the fetus can draw from.

The OP and posters who think that there is simply no way that a woman can gain above or below the recommended weight gain without overeating a ton is really missing the boat on everything about pregnancy. It changes your body in major, major ways, including the way you put on weight! And, like much of life, each of us are different. Probably why I can take down two cupcakes and a donut every couple of days and stay really slim, and my sister, two years younger than me, has to be much, much more strict with her diet, and exercise more.

Does not really seem like it should be that hard to get.

Btw the recommendation is 25-35lbs if you started with normal range Bmi. Some don't have extra breast tissue, I hardly went up half a size. Put on 35 lbs and lost 15 immediately after delivery. Took a year to take off another 15lbs and was never able to lose the remaining 5lbs. So now I am 125 lbs and 5-4".

I gained 45 pounds with both pregnancies. I really didn't eat much junk but pretty much doubled all my portions. So instead of one egg and a piece of toast for breakfast, I had two eggs and two pieces of toast. I knew I was eating too much but I was starving all the time. And with the first, I admit, I had a bit of a "well, I'm going to breastfeed so it will melt right off" attitude. Uh, no, not for everyone. C'est la vie.
