Are HGC centers worth it?

My recommendation is to do the application, have your kid take the test, don't make a big deal out of it, and see what happens. You don't want to stress your child out, and LOTS can change between beginning and end of third grade, when you need to make a decision. Third grade is often the beginning of struggles for kids who are GT and GTLD, as there may be types of work that isn't optimal for them.

Even if you think right now that you wouldn't send your child, go ahead and apply if you think it might be the right fit.

I always tell my kids: keep your options open. I will tell them the same now that high school applications are on the horizon.

I agree with this. My DC will start at an HGC in the fall. I believe she would have continued to do well at her home school, but believe that the children in that school aren't good peers for her. I look forward to a more diverse group and getting her out of a myopic, suburban school she has been in since K.

My experience has been that the peer group in HGC has not been more diverse. It has a higher %age of whites and Asians than the home-school. Peer group is more focused towards academics ... and that was my main aim.

Good question. I have been trying to find the data on this - so I do not know how accurate my info is.

From ES to MS - I had heard around 1/3 applied and got accepted from ES HGC to MS HGC.

From MS to HS - I heard around 60% applied and got accepted.

I'm the PP who asked the question. Is middle school HCG the same as middle school magnet programs? I admit, we have time, but I do need to start doing more research on this for my DD.

That's what I call the MS magnet. Maybe it is improper terminology. Roberto Clemente, Takoma Park and Eastern are the 3 magnets I am talking about. Parkland is also a magnet specializing in Aeronautics and is a cool program - that's by lottery.

The only HGC is in fourth and fifth grades.

MS and HS programs are magnets.

You are the only one in the world who calls the MCPS MS magnets the "middle school HGC."

I woild say about half the kids from my son's HCG applied to a MS magnet (Eastern or Takoma) and ended up going.

My child is in an ES HGC and I would not consider sending him to the Takoma MS magnet because it is so, so, so inconvenient.

Same here. Doesn't seem fair that the nearest MS magnet takes an hour and a half on the bus to get too.

You mean half of those who applied?
Anonymous
No..we were told about 1/2 the kids from HGC end up at the magnets. I assume that is pretty close to the number who applied.

Do people think HGC is worth if for a "math" kid that is in the top reading group but does not particularly enjoy writing?
