I got far more sleep in the hospital than I did at home, FWIW. You are being just as odious to PP as she was about leaving early.
OP, you have the right to stay 48 hours; you can decide what you think is best for your family. I personally liked staying 2 days with my second because I had good care at home for my first child, and it gave me a little more time to recover. |
| I think women that make it in a hospital for two days postpartum deserve a medal. Having gone home 4 hours after my first birth and 48 hours after my second birth, I think I deserved a medal for keeping it together at the hospital. But to each their own. |
I already said something similar to OP. I can easily see why OP wants to stay and absolutely recognize that not all women feel the way I did. I never said they do or should. What I found odious was PP's derision for anyone wanting to leave "you don't get a medal for leaving early." If you can't see what is coming off as obnoxious there, well, okay. |
PP here -- I can see, but you are both being obnoxious. So am I, but at least I am owning it.

I had a great experience with both of my births at Inova Ffx. I stayed 48 hours both times. It was great to have the help of the nurses, and to send the baby to the nursery for one night so I could get some good sleep. The food was not bad and it was great to just pick up the phone and order. I also had tearing/stitches both times, and I was in quite a bit of pain at first and again, was really glad to have the help of the nurses.
With my first, she ended up with jaundice so they were able to catch it before we left, and she had to stay a couple extra days. |

my last baby was born in september. he was born in the afternoon on a wednesday. I was discharged friday morning.
I would have liked to go home on thursday, but my BP was "too high" even though it was normal for me. BUt I think either way I would have been discharged friday, just because wednesday didn't count. I hate hospital stays, especially when I know DH is home taking care of the kids and dogs and the house by himself. |
| jaundice takes a few days to show up. So even if you stay 2 days it may not be detected. That is why you take baby to the pediatrician a few days out and then at 2 weeks. |
Yes, but in some cases it does start to show up earlier. I was born jaundiced and required treatment, my first daughter had jaundice and required in-patient treatment and my second daughter had jaundice that did not require treatment....all cases showed up within 36 hours. We are at risk for both ABO and Rh incompatibility so our chances of another jaundice child is much higher than average. After spending nights in a private maternity room vs night in a shared pediatrics room, I would much rather just stay put if given the chance. But yes, you should definately keep getting checked by your ped since many cases take longer than 2 days. BUT, this is all a personal decision. If I had no risk factors, I would want to be out of there and back in my own bed as fast as possible. |
