Is UMD's ranking accurate?

UVa has a very strong reputation in this region, but it is not well known in places like Chicago, Los Angeles, San Franciso or anywhere in Asia. If you plan to stay in the mid-Atlantic, UVa is a great value.

For USNews' Global Ranking, University of Maryland (College Park) ranks 51st, and University of Virginia ranks 102. Remember, UMD drastically outranks UVA in terms of international ranking and research, despite the fact that UVA's endowment is about 13 times larger than UMD's, and UVA has a more selective/prestigious undergraduate program. If UMD were in better financial shape, you would definitely see its selectivity and prestige increase at the undergraduate level. I don't go to either school, just looking at things objectively and not in terms of the school's traditional/historical position in the United State's hierarchy of education.

OP - rankings don't matter unless you understand and agree with criteria they used. More meaning info is quality of incoming students. You will notice they are very very close to each other.

UMD

Fall 2015 admitted freshman profile:
GPA: 4.22
SAT middle 50%: 1260-1420
ACT middle 50%: 29-33

UVA

^ another highly ranked public institution, UNC's mid 50% is very close to UMD and UVA as well.

OP, we live in Maryland and it seems that as private schools get more expensive, more and more top students are choosing to stay in state. The honors program, in particular, seems to be popular.

Except that GMU students are mentally retarded compared to the entering UMD class, at least according to SAT or GPA -both of which are std deviations higher.

VT is better - UMD is only one std deviation more difficult to get into...but GMU? I'd compare it to CNU or VCU.

Anonymous wrote:There are a handful of elite public schools (Berkeley, Michigan) and UVa falls in that group, though they have had a number of issues, including with the direction of the school recently. Maryland is a very good state school that is getting better -- but it is in that second tier of good public schools, probably below UNC but above say Rutgers, though it might be tied with Rutgers. (I think Illinois would be the right comparison.) UMBC seems, in some areas, to be stronger, but UMD provides an excellent education, and I think it is considerably above George Mason, which is a weird school in many ways (intentionally conservative in many disciplines and a commuter school -- U MD is primarily a residential school).

UMBC and GMU do not compare to UMD or UVA ... Sorry.

I know. I know. And College Park is much nicer and safer than Charlottesville.

Actually hate to say it but the crime rate is lower at CP than Charlottesville.

You sound like a lovely person. At which institution of higher learning did you learn your manners and compassion?

UNC is an academic fraud of an institution.

My DD was not accepted to UMD with a 4.0 GPA, and I was told that the adv. GPA for this year was 4.2. I also attended the graduation and a good portion of the speakers, including Wallace Loh, mentioned they would not have been accepted if they applied today. My DS loved every minute a UMCP, a great value.
