I got taken to lunch with my boss (thanks, but I don't like to watch you eat since you let things dribble out of your mouth, double-dip and always want to share) and was given a throw. That he got from the store his wife works at, where she gets a discount. |
Lawyers don't get paid to understand the ins and outs of your assistant job. That's a waste of time. It's beyond silly to think a manager partner billing hundreds of dollars an hour is going to pore over each assistant's job description. It's good that you left, allowing one of the thousands of qualified assistants in the DC area to get a job there. And if you think you were treated badly at this firm, I'd love to know where else you think you can phone it in for A YEAR and get a raise, rather than getting fired. I think you have some entitlement issues. |
I have had one fabulous assistant in my life. She was truly amazing. And all of the attorneys she worked for really went to bat for her and she got the largest raises available. The rest of the assistants that I have had have been mediocre to useless. They all have told me how great they are, though

Thank you for restating the point that these idiots missed. |
I think my assistant makes a lot even though she makes much less than I do. She probably works about 5% of the time that she is at the office. The rest of the time she surfs the Internet or texts her friends. $70k per year to do that is a lot. |

OP here. I really go above and beyond for my bosses. If they need something (like travel arrangements, etc) during non-work hours/weekends, they call my cell phone, and I take care of it. I do not get paid overtime to do this. Also, if they need me and I'm out at lunch, they will call my cell. I do not know of any other assistant here who does this.
Also, whenever HR sends out an email asking if anyone has time to help someone out (whose assistant is out, etc.), I'm almost always the first to volunteer. At my firm's last holiday function, they actually called me up and gave a speech about how they appreciate that, and they gave me a trophy (would have rather had a raise....). |
If you put in for overtime when you do work on the weekend or on your lunch hour, they would pay you that overtime or stop doing it. Either way you're a sucker for not going after what you rightfully deserve, you see? People will take advantage of you as much as you let them. My boss tried to call me on my lunch hour once. I didn't answer my phone. When I got back and he asked, I told him that not only do I sometimes leave my phone at home, but also, I don't always hear it in my bag. He asked, "What if there's an emergency?" I shrugged and smiled. "I'm not a doctor." |
Doormat.

What an unbelieveable bitch she is. |
| I think OP is lucky to have a job. I don't. |
Of course the OP is lucky to have a job. That doesn't mean she doesn't get to be annoyed when her boss says clueless entitled things. |
