I think it's terrible on babies but that once a girl is old enough to want it done, and can take care of them herself, it is fine. My DD had them done at nine. She is tall and looks like she is closer to twelve. She is great about cleaning them herself. I think it is an appropriate age for her. My mom did not let me pierce mine until I was 16 and did not pierce her own until she was 30!

Mine were peirced at 17 just before the HS graduation. At my school wearing any jewelry was not allowed. The reason: it is a distraction to the learning process.

That said, I might cave in and do it when DD is in middle school.
