I seriously don't feel sorry for you. Your kid has allergies and that suck, I do feel for him/her. But you volunteered for this project. You could have easily send him/her a seperate snack. - 100 raisens, 100 grapes, 100 crackers, etc. |
I forgot about forty-ten! When my son was learning to count it was my favorite number. |
We used paper clips and hung them in lines of ten on a hanger. |
PP about the allergies/100 days' cake:
To the person who posted about the paper clips, thank you, great idea. To the person who posted that I could send in a "seperate" snack, I already have a bag of that non-nut food stuff at school for him on the other 5000 times a year that it's a birthday party/school holiday/special treat day. I just wanted him to be able to have the cake. I know I volunteered, I just think it's excessive to have a cake for a fake holiday, ask for 100 things from home, and have a valentine's day party and write out valentines' class cards, AND all the regular homework in one week. |
Seriously, lighten up. Grab 10 pasta noodles (use different types ziti, bowtie, spaghetti), 10 dried beans, 10 pennies, 10 stickers, 10 paperclips, 10 pens, 10 rubberbands, 10 rocks. It really shouldn't take more than a few minutes. And, your child should be able to do most of the work. If K isn't fun, we won't develop life-long learners. |
I first heard of it when I taught in Fairfax County back in the mid 1990s. Marcy Cook workshops were what all the primary teachers were raving about and I thought they got the idea from her. I can't tell if that is true, but she did seem to have an enormous amount of ideas (all great!) for using the 100s chart to develop number sense.

Bad idea to put non-edible things on an item to be eaten! I would confirm with the teacher... what kinds of things does she want on that cake?? |
Collecting 100 items was a separate activity from the cake. |
Its a fun way to celebrate math. Kids have to come up with different ways to make the number 100.
Its fun. Its ok for school to be fun. |
Exactly. This is not just about counting to 100. It can be differentiated in so many ways. 10 sets of 10. 20 sets of 5. Counting by 2,5 10. Early multiplication skills. Try to have some fun while learning. For th ose whose kids are geniuses - try a mix of combos to get 100. 5 sets of 10 and 10 sets of five. The possibilities go on and on! |
Of the things to get spun out of control aboot, this seems pretty damned low on the list.
Parental involvement was specifically verbotten for the 100th day party at my DD's school. DW and I didn't have to do anything for the occasion (we are being asked if we can bring snacks/ourselves to V-Day party next week.) |
also remember some kids unless you go to one of the de facto gated communities in Bethesda, Upper NW, etc., barely know their alphabet when they hit kindergarten ... |
Wouldn't be so bland if they were still allowed to have celebrations for Halloween and Christmas. |
Good God, OP here and I wasn't complaining or grousing or bitching. I was asking. Leave it to DCUM to find the drama in anything. |
What she said. (Love it.) |
