I am in my office with the door closed all day long at work (I'm in a counseling role so need privacy). Believe me, being in there all day long without a window (I'm located on the basement level) is rough. I never used the fluorescent overhead lights -- instead I have torchiere floor lamps that direct light upwards onto walls and ceiling. I also added some touches of color with framed posters and a silk flower arrangement. It looks pretty good in my office now, although I still miss natural light (sigh).
In our space all offices are internal and all cubes have the views. While I have an office it makes the space really open.

I'm at a federal contractor and we are losing almost all of our offices and moving to cubicles. No more window for me.
Sorry OP, no advice but plenty of sympathy here. I am very fortunate to have always had an office with a window, no matter how small. I'd go nuts without it. When I used to travel to other organizations to do doc collection or whatever, I was always so depressed hanging out in their cube farms and windowless offices. I don't know how people function in the work place without light and privacy. You couldn't hear yourself think for all the cube farm chatter. Even sharing an office was better, and I've shared with up to three people. I'd far rather do that than be stuck out in the open with no natural light. I wander outside for a short walk at least once a day as it is.
I could care less about my status with the organization. I feel depressed when I don't see any natural light all day.
I remember reading a study that showed when people had a problem they couldn't solve or writers' block, etc., seeing nature helped them resolve it. The authors suggested going outside for a short walk when stuck but, interestingly, even looking at a picture of greenery had measurable results.
