This has got to be a farce post. |
Indeed. I have tried very hard to imagine how OP and her (possibly, arguably) candy-grubbing children have raised our national debt ceiling and got us into two needless foreign wars, but I just don't see it. If they are what is wrong with our country today, I guess we need a national T/O/T agenda. |
| It is SHOCKING to me that people judge where kids trick or treat. They're KIDS. Having FUN. You should all be deeply ashamed of yourselves. I wish we'd gotten more kids - the more the better! It actually turns my stomach to read some of these posts. |
| I know what you mean OP. I live on the Hill, very close to Hilloween. The kids that attend Hilloween are sweet, young, diverse, always with parents etc. The kids she's talking about are frequently not dressed up, come at all hours, barely say a word to you, and it just surprises you at first. You think it will be neighborhood kids with parents that come door to door (though the vast majority of hill kids are quite young), but it's not. Nothing wrong with bringing up the topic. |
|
You know what....
The kid that doesn't wear a costume, may not be able to afford a costume. Or may not be able to stand wearing a costume because he/she has sensory issues, or ASD, or some other problem or issue. Ditto with saying "Trick or treat" or making eye contact. Not every kid can do it. My kid can't. I would weep tears of joy if she could say Trick or Treat, even once. She can't. It has nothing to do with rudeness. She can't talk. She can't climb the steps to the houses in our neighborhood, so we drive a few blocks away. That's life. I can't imagine a grown person begrudging a kid candy. Shame on you. |
OP here. I didn't say I MINDED the hordes of TOTers . . . I just wondered where they came from. Indeed, we had a great time and passed out over 1000 pieces of candy; we seemed to be the last house open on our block. And for those all up in arms asking how I know the majority don't live in the (near) neighborhood - give me a break! I live here and walk the blocks around my house and have children in the local elementary. I have a pretty good (evidence-based) idea of who lives in the neighborhood. |
Oh come on. You weren't really asking where they come from. You have a good idea. And we know what you were implying - "THESE" CHILDREN DON'T BELONG IN "MY" NEIGHBORHOOD. Evidence based my ass. I tot'ed in a different neighborhood with a friend because it was close to day care. I am one of "them," I guess. |
Evidence based? For 1000 people? Snort. |
Why do you care, OP? |
|
You may recognize the 7 and under crowd you see at the playgrounds, but do you really think you know every kid that lives on Capitol Hill? The neighborhood is huge.
When I was growing up I lived at one end a large neighborhood. On Halloween, we almost make it to the other side trick or treating. I'd hate to think those neighbors who didn't recognize me as living down the street were giving a second thought as to why I rang their doorbell. |
You do realize this is sort of like my claiming to know every kid in Silver Spring, based simply on living there, walking my dog, and having children that go to school? Can't you see how ridiculous that is? You are making an ass of yourself. |
| I think a lot of people read into the OP's post more than what was there, and then there were other posters who contributed mean-spirited and/or bigoted sentiments about "outsiders." When I first read the OP's post, I didn't assume anything negative at all about race or class - just surprise at the volume of kids. I don't blame the OP for being curious as to why the Hill attracts so many kids for Trick or Treat - it's interesting to me as a former Hill resident - 10 years ago on the still gentrifying side of things we got ZERO ToTers. I think it's great that this area is now haven for kids, whomever they may be and whereever they may live. And I'm also in the more, the merrier group - my current neighborhood has become busier on Halloween over the past decade because of changing demographics (more kids!) and I'm thrilled. If people thought it was a desirable place to trick or treat, I'd see that as a huge plus! |
Huge difference in tone between "Isn't it great how the neighborhood has changed" and "Where did all these people come from" |
I'm not sure that's true. The older ones may not be at Hilloween or playing at Marion Park, but they're around. |
I think a lot of people are conflating what 10:57, that lunatic, said with what the OP said. OP's post was unnecessary and she does NOT know everyone in Capitol Hill regardless of what she thinks her evidence suggests, but 10:57 blew this post out of the water and made OP look worse by association. |
