What brand watch should I get DH for this 35th birthday?

Anonymous
You can get a very nice watch for $1500 or less, I'd save your money ... Even an Omega Seamaster Quartz for ex. is within that range and is iconic, among many other brands or models....

Even below 1000 there are many quality watches that are a good value unless the showoff factor is the important issue.

Then you must not be rich, because if you were then you'd know that high-quality timepieces appreciate in value.

OP, a Rolex Mariner is a good classic, versatile choice. Just a tad outside of your budget.

Sorry - I meant submariner

+1. My DH had a submariner years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, it was burgled from the home. He would love another but now there's kids and we can't/won't justify $5k on a watch. But in a dream world!

I'm a watch guy, ask me anything

So, OP, you put a post out there stating your intentions and asking for suggestions and nearly every post, true to snarky dcum custom, trashes your idea (a lovely one, btw)

So ladies--I suppose you all wear cheap fake jewelry and shop at Ross and TJ Maxx too?

I have several mechanical watches. Guys like things that are well engineered, and a subtle watch (no bling) that is well made can be great fun to own and wear.

DC is not a watch town but there are several up/down the east coast that will send you a watch with full return privileges. I like Kenjo in NYC.

timezone.com is our place to hang out and will give you an idea of some brands a bit outside the norm. There are plenty of pics to help guide you.

happy to respond to questions. to the rest of you--go snark in the next thread, please.

Anonymous wrote:$3,000-$5,000 for a WATCH? Are you serious? What could it possibly have that couldn't be found in a watch 1/10 or less of that price? You could travel to Europe for a week or buy a few new computers for that price.

Exactly. The movements are similiar, it's the label or gold plating that costs more.

I spent $1,500 or so on a Tag 10 years ago. It sits in my chest, never wear it. my phone tells me the time.

That might be part of it, but it's more than that. The expensive ones are better made. Practically unscratchable and indestructible. They work for generations. Right, watch guy?

Also - watch guy - what do you think of the Rolex submariner?
Anonymous
Not the watch guy, but another watch guy. The submariner seems a little bling its kind of big (per op she wants low key I thought). I'd got for omega sea master ( but not quartz never spend money on a quartz movement. The money is for the mechanical movement). Also a basic stainless oyster perpetual day/date. Love it. Iconic.

Following up on the basic oyster perpetual, what's great is it is low key but you can see and feel the quality. A real thing of value to some. Like a simple strand of pearls from a woman's perspective.

This thread is gross. WE can afford this! Poor people do this! THIS watch will "get noticed." such a joke.

watch guy here. I would ask pp about double standards..do you chime in on every ladies clothing/jewelry and inhabit the vacation threads with the same point? relax and move along...

sry i have no opinion on rolex..don't hold me to this but i think most watch folks consider them for newbies.

it really depends on style and we haven't heard from OP on this. my own preferences tend to

www.girard-perregaux.com
www.blancpain.com
www.jaeger-lecoultre.com

in each you can find a basic stainless model that hubbie will enjoy. I enjoy a watch that no one knows has any value--it's just for my personal enjoyment and maybe other watch guys will notice.

btw careful w mail order; there's a huge gray market out there sans warranties

Cartier Ronde Solo. My ex wore this and it looked great:

My husband too. And we could afford it as well, but he's just not into spending money on stuff like that. Besides, I'd rather go to the Caribbean or something.

Some of you PPs are annoying.

We can afford the vacations and the watches. ANd cars. Feel better now?

Take the watch guy's suggestions. Jaeger Lecoultre is great. So is Cartier. Rolex is a bit...eh. Patek Phillipe is hard to beat, but not sure if there is anything in that pricerange. Baume Mercier also makes some really nice ones. And Audemars Piguet.

very feminine tastes, IMO. I'm a male who wears a nice watch. I'd probably assume you were gay.
Anonymous
DH loves the Tag that I bought him 10 years ago and wears it daily. "only" $1000.

I agree with some who say that, for a man who appreciates it, a nice watch can be synonymous with a pearl necklace or diamond earrings for a woman.

We aren't wealthy people by DC standards (250HHI), only take vacations every 2 or 3yrs for example, but the occasional tangible luxury is a nice momento.
