How much recess does your FCPS elementary schooler have?

Anonymous
The benefits of lots of play is well documented in the research. DC will soon start kindergarten and we are also concerned that there is little recess time at elementary schools. It's also very difficult to find a play based preschool program for parents who work full time. Personally, we are putting way too much pressure on children and robbing them for being children.

I am a very involved mom who is a teacher, cook, nurse, engineer, disciplinarian, etc that doesn't just dump my children off thinking that everything is peachy. I want to see and know what is going on at school for 7 hrs a day. I can't stand defensive and judgmental people like you. You r so clueless. So sad for you.

Not the PP you're responding to but someone who thinks you're just full of shit. "A teacher, cook nurse, engineer, disciplinarian, etc"? Spare me.

Did you not get her response? For SOME mothers, we do play many roles. Obviously, you do not, which is fine, but just know that some of us do. Don't presume that we are all like you just as we will not assume that everyone is like us. There are all kinds of parents out there. Just do what you can and don't compare. That should have been a lesson you learned a while back, but better late than never.

You're just as full of shit as the "teacher, cook, nurse, engineer, disciplinarian, etc ". Every single person (not just mothers) has multiple roles in life. That doesn't mean we're qualified to speak as if we really were a "teacher, cook, nurse, engineer, disciplinarian, etc ". The rest of your post is makes no sense. I guess 'writer' isn't one of your 'roles'.

Can we get back to the subject of FCPS having too short a recess?
Anonymous
I can't understand why 1. so many parents find this surprising (it's not a secret) or 2. you all don't do something about it. As a teacher I absolutely HATED the short recess policies. One year I was even told not to give my K students ANY recess. It was all so we could stuff more academics into the day for those students who were struggling and weren't likely to get high sol scores. This is all related to testing. Less time for recess is more time for test prep. If you don't like it, then do something about it. I used to wish parents would get together and do something, but they never do. Teachers don't have any power or voice in FCPS, so if you don't like the short recess then go to the school board and start standing up for your kids.

18:49. I am happy to do this and have gone before every year, but I always feel from teachers and administrators that you don't like it. That it's more change for teachers. Why don't these parents just leave me alone to do my job? Teachers can't have it both ways. And why are teachers not able to talk to FCPS? Isn't that part of your job??? To let your boss know when something isn't working? Now this is solely a parent's responsibility to change the inner workings of FCPS?

I can't speak for every teacher, but I always liked parents in the school. However, I don't work there anymore and don't really think that most teachers share my way of thinking. You might be right about that. However, you are incorrect in thinking that teachers can "talk" to fcps, or really anyone. If teachers are lucky they can talk to their principal, but that's as far as it goes. And as for it being our job - in my school, I couldn't even do my basic job when it involved talking to any administrator. They wanted nothing to do with teachers who felt something wasn't working or who wanted anything from them at all. Parents have all the power - teachers have no voice at all. Change has to come from parents, or it will continue to come from politicians.

Well that's a sad state of things if teachers can't even voice what is or isn't working for their classroom. Parents feel they have no power with the school and so do teachers. The two people who have the most influence on the next generation.

Every county has a superintendent. They are there to serve you and work with you on valid issues. I am in the process of doing this on a number of issues in my county. Just google your county and superintendent. You will find their contact info. Don't be scared. Stand up for the children.
