A cell phone for an 8 year old!?!

I totally agree that an 8 year old doesn't need (and shouldn't have) a cell phone. However, I started thinking about my son (9 yo) and his iPod. I have parental controls all throughout it but he can Facetime his grandparents and his friend who moved away. He has to ask permission before doing so but he does do it. It's not too different from a phone, really. The difference is the cost. He can't rack up a ton of charges on the iPod. Other than that, this post has made me realize that I basically armed my kid with cell phone without the phone feature. Maybe an actual cell phone isn't that much of a stretch?
