I've been explaining this nonsense to people the past couple weeks. we have friends in parts of the country that are out by memorial day. They just cannot fathom why anyone is still in school. I am pretty bitter that NoVA is about the only area that is still denied an exception to this law - more than 50% of the school systems are allowed to start early, which means the law only applies to a minority of VA school districts. It is such a bullshit law.

I don't understand how Loudoun could get an exemption from that law, but not FFx county.

Why are we always planning for the children that have parents who do nothing for or with them?

Um, because those are the most vunerable children who could use our help the most????

Um, yeah. Ha, original PP. What could possibly be good about trying to help kids whose parents aren't able to do so (most are working 3 jobs not just eating bon bons and willfully not helping their kids do xyz)?

You can help those children without changing the entire school system for everyone. There are summer schools, free daycare, free meals, Saturday classes, smaller classes, extra teachers, you name it already existing. Why would one more change affect the outcome for the people you are talking about? I think it is better to help the adults working the 3 jobs than help the children in this case.
