Christine Lagarde, IMF Head, spoke at Holton graduation today...

The basic point is flawed, the 400 grads do not represent everyone -- they are indeed all lucky to attend such a fine school and may indeed all (or nearly all) be special in the global context.

This graduation speech was deplorable. The students being addressed were celebrating an important milestone in their lives. They had spent 4 years waking up early, staying up late, to keep up in their very competitive world. The valedictorians worked their butts off to get those grades......most of them also involved in outside activities. Many (perhaps most) of students he was addressing are passionate about volunteering in there community and in other parts of the world.
I think most parents realize their school system is not going to coddle their children. This graduation speech was more about an angry, burnt out middle age man than it was about the young people he was talking too. It was also offensive to the parents in the audience.

Anyone who took offense at his speech is an idiot. He is trying to send a message about entitlement. Get a grip.

You have no idea what you are talking about pp.

Now on to the Wellesley speech -- I thought the guy was deplorable and I look up his email address online and wrote to him to say so. His dad was a famous writer...maybe he needed a little more loving or something.

You are a moron.

Look in the mirror pp. This goof ball's dad was/is a famous writer. He is a big loser not to do anywhere near as well as his famous dad.

New PP here. He IS a famous writer because he's still alive. That, plus the idea that anyone who goes into teaching (even if he probably has a trust fund) is a "big loser" makes you the loser.

I don't think of David McCullough as a writer as much as an historian. But that's me.
