Why do people think its easy to quit smoking?

Anonymous
I have great sympathy for anyone battling an addition. I have seem many people struggle and it is a terrifying thing to witness.

I have an addictive personality and can well imagine that if I were to get hooked on cigarettes/using hard drugs, I would be an addict and probably die from my habit.

I have smoked cigarettes in my late teens/early 20's, but it was usually coupled with drinking, marijuana use. Otherwise, I can't stand the smell, taste, so it's a use deterrent.

Some of this thread have said that those who smoke are weak. Well, maybe they are. Not all people in the world are strong-willed. There are many people in the world who are weak-willed. Of course, many don't find this out until it's too late.

Used to smoke. Quit easily. Think it is a mix of not-really-addictive personality and strong will. I do think it is easier for some than others but part of me thinks - just quit. I did. If you smoke while pregnant and/or when you have kids, you are just weak and pathetic, period.

this is why my husband's quit for year then go back crap drives me nuts. He SWORE he would never smoke after he had kids. He quit for years. Just for some odd reason started back up. It just makes me think he's weak, as you said.

This is true. I quit smoking "cold turkey" and it was very difficult. However, I really wanted to quit and this made the differemce

If you have never smoked you don't know what it's like.

If you have and was able to quit, then consider yourself lucky. Many in my family try and try and just can't do it. It's a very strong addiction.

You mean, your family is a bunch of weak-willed people.

Who were too ignorant to know that smoking is bad for you.

Just don't buy them. Problem solved.

You chose to start smoking, knowing it was bad for you, knowing people get addicted to nicotine, so I really just don't feel sorry when people come to find out, hey, it's bad for me and it's hard to quit because I'm addicted! No shit, Sherlock.

I agree with this 100%. No, I never had to quit smoking because I was smart enough to never start.

Add me to this list.

Me, too. Quitting was one of the most difficult things I've ever done.

Obviously neither of you is smart enough to know how lucky you are. May your remaining days continue to be blessed with ignorance, and may you always be able to lord it over others different from you.

Exactly. And you think we're the ignorant ones? We are the ones who were smart enough to know not to ever start smoking. Did someone hold a gun to your head and force you to put that first cigarette in your mouth? No? Then you weren't forced to start either.

Luck? Seriously??

It's not hard, I've done it several times.

Seriously though, I think quitting now is much easier than it was in the past. First, there are a variety of ways to get over the physical addiction -- the patch, gum, and wellbutrin at least. Second, the main thing I found difficult was being around other smokers, particularly at bars. Now smoking is prohibited pretty much everywhere. Not only do you have to go out of your way to buy cigarettes, you have to go out of your way to smoke them. Third, cigarettes are ridiculously expensive.
