walk to the metro

It's a cheap way to stay skinnier! As long as it's a safe walk (for traffic and crime), that's nothing!

It is a brief and easy walk. But we're talking about walking for commuting - if you're having to walk 1.5 miles or more in the pouring rain its not so fun. I can easily walk 3 miles or more, but walking 1.5 miles in the rain while toting items for work is not the same.

1/2 a mile.

I can't imagine people thinking 3/4 mile is too far to walk. No wonder everyone is obese in this country.

One mile is the limit for me. Spring, fall and, yes, winter are OK for walking but walking to/from the Metro in Washington summers can be miserable in work clothes.

I go just more than a mile to catch my bus, so I bike it. The bike goes on the front of the bus and it is much less sweaty.

3/4 of a mile is not far.

3/4 of a mile in the pouring rain or high heat or across ice while toting work items is. The posters whining about how lazy others are don't seem to understand that walking to commute is different then walking for exercise.

Exactly. I try to walk 3 miles a day on top of whatever running I do in the morning. But in summer I have to break it into 15 or 20 minute segments and walk slowly, or else I get very sweaty. Not a problem on the weekend if I'm in shorts, but I can't show up at the office pouring sweat. And I don't want to have to dry clean my clothes after each wear either, which I'd have to do if I walked more than a mile home in the summer. I envy people who think 90 and humid is comfortable. They must be much happier here than I.

I am lucky because I have a half mile walk to metro on either end of the commute -- so my commute alone is 2 miles round trip. Then I get out for 20 minutes at lunch. Voila, 3 miles. But it is still beastly in the summer.
