Did you do something extravagant to celebrate your 50th?

Yes you are right. It was a pretty inexpensive weekend get-away with a party on Saturday night.

It's making me sad and depressed because I'd like to have a party or do something really special. Any ideas for something special that doesn't cost a lot?

This is us too. I turned 50 last summer, and because there's a lot of upheaval in our family right now (finances, two aging parents to deal with, first kid off to college, a move to a new city) we didn't do much for my birthday. It will be our 25th wedding anniversary in 18 mos. By then I'm hoping we're in a position to take a nice trip or do something special.

Why not reach out to your old college friends? My friends and I (6 of us) are planning to go away for a weekend - just us - to have a joint 50th birthday party. Our financial fortunes range greatly, but we did a survey, set a budget, gave plenty of time to plan - I'm thinking we'll end up flying somewhere (frequent flyer) and sharing a nice villa and going out to eat and drink a lot!

My birthday is 3 days after Christmas so we always go somewhere fun + in the sun for my bday because I hate cold weather.

Op you did your husband is usually low key. If he wants something extravagant or his 50th and you can afford it, then do it.

On my actual birthday we had a family dinner and a cake with candles. That weekend we had my sister babysit the kids and we went out to dinner.

If you have the cash and are inclined, just go for it. You have eachother today. You never know when one of you will die or seriously ailing. (true whether 50 or 25)

This is really going to vary depending on whether your kids are grown up when you turn 50, or like a few of us, you have very young children. My children are very young so I would want to do something with them as a family - probably a vacation or even a weekend getaway.
