I'm black. I say black boys all the time. I didn't get the memo that we were only supposed to say AA boys.

And, these children may be neither African American nor African. With the diversity in the area, especially the World Bank and IMF people, there are lots of people who are "black," but who self identify as, for example, French. So maybe it's people who realize that who are the people who say "black boys" these days. Geesh!

I know a lot of black people from Africa, the caribbean, of African, Caribbean and Arab origin that are citizens of other countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands , UK or the US. Of these, the majority identify both as black and as nationals of either their country of origin or their adoptive country. The exception are the Arabs who may identify themselves as Arabs as well as their nationality. Most people who are black have no problem being called black. I have yet to meet a black person who is also, say, French or German or British who has a problem being called black. It is not a derogatory term for us. I am more concerned with being treated equally than about being called black.

Pp you are quoting here. I completely agree. I was trying to say the same thing, that there are many black people who do not identify as African American or African, so it makes perfect sense to use the term "black," despite the fact that "African Amercan" may be the more commonly accepted term for people who are, in fact, African American.

You say "Geesh", but your comment makes no sense. Huh? I only have a law degree, not an interpret dumb comments degree.

Really? You don't understand that many, many black-skinned people are neither African nor African American, so referring to them as such is t really appropriate or accurate? Dont think those legal reasoning classes did you a whole lot of good.

When society looks at them, they see black. Get over it.

This is creepy. Here is a suggestion: call the AD and ask to be connected with a fellow AA family who will have a son in C form next year. I know of at least 3 or 4 from Beauvoir alone. No, I am not going to tell you what their parents do for a living and if they get FA or not because it would be a gross invasion of their privacy to post that on a public forum.

Why do you have to be unkind? Just answer the part of the question you are willing to answer and move on. Many people on this board try to assess how they will fit in at a new school. There's really no need to be rude and call the OP creepy.

OP, what are you really trying to figure out? I agree with PP, you're post is creepy. And, I don't like the idea of a parent (the helpful PP) who doesn't know a particular family looking them up in the school directory and then providing his or her take on that family's lifestyle. It's quite likely that it wouldn't be too difficult for this small community (Form C parents) to identify the family.

For the LAST time, I was not going to give details about the families and their lifestyles!! I was only going to check to see if I had the NUMBERS right. I thought I was quite clear on this but obviously not.

How hard is it to count to two? You said previously that only two AA, Beauvoir boys were coming to STA from this year's graduating class. Why did you have to offer reviewing the school directory for confirmation? It appeared that you were responding to the post that wanted to know what "type" of AA family/category the boys are attached to, i.e., legacy, smart, sports, FA, World Bank.

I will check the directory when I get home.
There were only 4 black boys in the Beauvoir graduating class and only the two at STA now applied to STA.

Great. Can't wait to get your report about the "black boys".

NP. PP the tone of your post implies that you will give the two boys families the once over and share your assumptions. If one or both of these boys' families is headed by a single parent or appears of a lower socioeconomic background will you broadcast that on here?

Ick on the stereotypical assumptions here. As someone who knows the kids, they are members of the 1%.

Again, you don't have any business broadcasting a family's business on this forum. You're talking about a small community and an even smaller group within that community. Next, why don't you post their names. Sheesh

Ok I'll break it down for you. I'd originally said that there are 5 black boys in the current c form but I wasn't sure so said I would check that number in the directory. I pressed submit too early so I had to continue in a separate post where I mentioned the boys from beauvoir's graduating class last year. Since my son was not at Beauvoir I can't possibly verify from the Beauvoir directory. I wasn't going to give details about any family. I was just going to verify the number of black boys in this year's c form. I repeat, I was not going to give out any details just numbers in this year's c form. I really hope I don't have to clarify this again. This is not classified information. No names, no details. Just numbers.

This is a sad and demeaning post on so many levels. OP, as has been stated, contact the admissions office if you want specifics.

Considering Beauvoir has several pages of their parent/student directory posted as a PDF online with names, grades, addresses, phone numbers, emails, etc. I don't understand why the PP offering to provide a head count is being treated as such a big deal.

She said that her son wasn't from Beauvoir, but is a current C form student so she's reviewing her STA directory.

Whatever, I'm a different poster, asshole. If OP, wants to gauge whether or not her son and family will be accepted or potentially fit in...contact the admissions office.

The small group of 9 year olds who SES profile is being mined consists of about 4 kids. Soliciting for their parents SES, and the child's intellectual abilities to be posted in an online forum is intrusive and , yes, creepy.

For a fellow parent to use the school directory to provide the info in an internet forum is a violation of the trust that is assumed when the directories are handed out. Why not just call the AD at STA and ask.

I assume the OP is not connected to the school and just wants to mine how many AA children STA accepts and what their SES status is. Kind of pointless as that changes every year.

PP above : what you have done could be considered using the confidential directory to provide demographics to an outside organization for their own purposes. Read the preface of the directory again for the admonition as to what the privacy constraints are. Aside from that, your post is tasteless.
