Can Prince George's schools ever be improved?

Re tax rates: PG county taxes are higher on property, income, and utilities. See http://www.dat.state.md.us/sdatweb/taxrate.html

This means a higher tax rate. If you refuse to have a higher tax rate, you will always have 3rd rate education, police, etc. (or a flock of rich people magically move to PG so there is more income in dollars for the same tax rate).

Amen. Stop spending your money on Air Jordans. designer clothing, snack food, liquor and beer, and guns.

I rather enjoy the idea that you won't be moving to my lovely PG neighborhood. Please stay out.

Yes, and they have to be even higher. If you are poor, almost your entire income needs to go to food, shelter, and education. So your fractional tax rate has to be very high. A top teacher doesn't cost less because she/he is teaching in a poor district. So, to afford her, the residents need a very high tax rate to get same number of dollars that you would get for a low tax rate in a rich county. It would be great if some rich people moved into PG so that the current PG tax rate would bring in tons of their dollars. But, that isn't going to happen. So we in PG have to pay a very high tax rate to afford the good teachers, so that our children will not be as poor as we are. But the PG residents seem to think either the rich will just volunteer to send their money to PG or seem satisfied that their children will not receive the education they need to move up.

what's this about Dr. Hite being considered a finalist for a new job? Superintendent of Philadelphia public schools?

Please ship him to Philadelphia. PGCPS need an honest superintendent with a background in education. Dr. Hite has been a Jack Johnson crony that has continued the history of corruption, nepotism, professional misconduct and discrimination. There have been petitions and calls to replace him for half of the time he's been in office. We need to move away from the Jack Johnson era and have someone with a background in education and not football to run the school district.
