Why are there no white kids at Banneker?

Anonymous
The only syndrome will on cease when there's a high-school starting from grade 9. Not many whites will venture into high-school population that has a majority population of AA. Wilson is living on long rich tradition or being a mixed/school. Once you go black it is hard to go back to a diverse way of thinking. Familiarity brings comfort. I will say that Dunbar will probably embrace a faster diverse culture change before McKinley. Merely because whites don't apply to schools that have majority AA population they just show-up as in Wilson (non-application). But you have SWW and they are applying in abundance because of the need to apply in their own status little world.

Petworth MCWP here. I have many years to worry about this but I would not hesitate to send my kid to Banneker if she felt comfortable there. Her best friends at DCPS are smarty pants middle class AA girls with college educated parents, and we are a nerdy family, and frankly a lack of emphasis on sports and boys sounds like a plus to me (!) I want her to take AP classes, go to a highly rated college...
You do not have to be middle class or white to be smart. Read Ben Carson's biography sometime.

Not sure what you're all talking about in terms of Eliot Hines but they did try to change McKinley. They opened it for 9th grade only a few years ago. White's did not go there in droves. It's an amazing physical space and should be a gem of a high school but why isn't it? Because it's in NE and not on Capitol Hill or NW.

prejudice at work.

OP, just because nobody checked the box for white, doesn't mean there are NO white-looking multiracial kids or NO kids from MCW adoptive parents. Some self-identified Hispanics who would be racially "white" by narrow US standards (as in no drops of non-European blood) don't bother to check race after ethnicity box.

Maybe the question is not why no white kids, but why are all the Pacific/Hawaiians t)in DCPS there? Obama relations?

Middle class white people/parents

This is exactly why Asian kids are excelling. Some racial groups are so small minded. Yor little precious white kids are into everything but you put them on a white horse as if they do not have problems. My husband is a professor in the chemistry department at George Mason and he states that white parents are upset because to many Asian are being admitted to the department even though these students are qualified. You all worry about diversity. African Americans have always been the first in many schools and have survived taunts and violence. Black people are the most accepting people in the world. Children are the products of what we teach them!

My wife's view is exactly the same as 06:45. She reminds me that she was often the only non-white kid the class and she coped. Coped admirably I would add. To my mind there are significant points of difference though. She was growing up in small town Utah in the 70s; there were no options. Having choices can make us a bit precious.

My husband and other friends have pondered this as well. We've heard people claim they want the best academic environment for their child, but put them at Wilson. Our children our only in elementary school, but when we think of high schools, Wilson isn't even on our list! I think the neighborhood has something to do with it, but one thing my husband has pointed out is that white people in this country will rarely put themselves in a situation where they are the minority-gentrification doesn't count, but black people have and continue to do so. Having grown up in an evinronment where many white parents pulled their kids out of the schools when we showed up (during the mid 70's and 80's) I've gotta say this smells like a similar thing. If you don't want your child to be the 'only one' get a few friends together and send your kids. Trust me, it will be OK. We don't bite and our color won't rub off (tongue in cheek).

Why?

Basically, you're saying, "White people never act in a certain way, except when they do - but that doesn't count. So, white people never act in a certain way." That doesn't make any sense.

Why doesn't it count? Because it contradicts your assertion?
