Saying goodbye to an old friend (diet coke)

Anonymous
Another 4-6 a day addict here who's been DC free for ten years. Try sparkling water, unsweetened iced tea with fresh lemon slices, and Red Zinger (hibiscus) tea over ice. Hot mint tea with a teaspoon of sugar is also great. Altoids are now my go-to for sweet tooth cravings.

I gave up diet, and once in awhile I treat myself to a regular soda. It is much better than drinking diet constantly. My dad does not drink anything but diet pepsi. I can only imagine what his kidneys look like. lol.

It's not just the tasted, it's the whole experience. It tastes good, the straw is the perfect size, I love the way the carbonation touches my tongue and the tingling I feel in my nose. I'm switching to the 2 liter bottles because they're cheaper and not as experiential. It's hard, though, because my DH isn't on board with quitting and when I see him drinking one, it's hard not to want my own. I know we'd both be healthier without it but....

(I have to say the herbal tea thing doesn't sound anywhere near as enticing as a Diet Coke.)

Not herbal tea. Iced tea, with caffeine.

I am also a Diet Coke addict! You all have inspired me and I am also going to give it up. I have 5 8 oz bottles left and will do it slowly over the next couple of days.

A few months ago I gave it up and I lost weight but the cravings were so bad that I took it up again.

I am really going to do it this time!!

OP You are inspiring me to quit the DC habit...something I know I need to do as well. My naturopath said it would be better to drink regular coke than diet, though she of course would prefer I didn't drink any soda at all!

I gave up all caffeinated soda for about a year and a half when I was in college but I did miss it terribly. I had a really bad day once and bought a coke and it was sweet sweet nirvana. I just never felt right w/o it. I am worried about trying to give it up again and not feeling right.

McDonalds diet coke is the best.

The opposite happened to me, I gave up regular and dropped 8 pounds.

Agreed. I cut way back by only drinking fountain DC so it's limited to eating out.

No, you diet by cutting calories. It's the only way. But diet soda actually stimulates your appetite. You're much better off drinking 300 calories of regular soda than 0 calories of diet plus 600 calories of junk that your body is tricked into wanting. Really, that chemical shit messes with your natural appetite and your metabolism.

My midwife is begging me to let go of my beloved diet coke. I am trying so hard to just have one when I wake up, but I love it so much! Crisp and sweet...at least I don't go around swigging from a chilled 2 liter anymore...

Diet Coke is disgusting. How do you become hooked on something that tastes like crap? I think I'd rather smoke.

Good for you OP! I absolutely love DC and have tried to quit, but that only lasted a day or two. I know it's not good for me...when I get a craving and there isn't any DC in the house, I will make a quick trip just to pick it up, even if it's in the middle of the night, and I do tend to crave and eat more sugary foods when drinking DC. I'm scared of getting kidney stones, but have tried to sub DC with other drinks like flavored water, iced tea, etc and it's just not the same.

I hate DC but am really addicted to Coke Zero!!

What happened to coke splenda, that shit was awesome.

Op, have you tried soda water with juice? I do 2/3 soda water, and then 1/3 is cranberry and orange juice.
