You are so right, PP. Only a crazy person would travel internationally with a newborn just to get their genitals mutilated so they match DH's. I'm disgusted by OP.

FWIW, my pediatrician strongly advised against international travel until after at least 2 months, because of the increased risk of pertussis pre-DTaP. I hope OP is not so infatuated with the idea of getting her son's penis cut ASAP that she doesn't see that represents a real, possibly mortal, risk to her baby.

If you're in the UK (seems like that's the assumption here) why not look for a Muslim doctor in London? Circumcision is just as common among Muslims as among Jews, but Muslims typically have medical professionals perform the procedure. London has a large Muslim community so there must be experienced doctors there.

To all of the posters who feel it's their place to insult the OP and impose your beliefs on her as if your word was gospel - PLEASE GET OVER YOURSELVES. I wonder how many of you mommy geniuses drive your kids around in a car? Since you love statistics so much and believe in their usefulness as a tool for shaming others, why don't you go check the risk of harm to your newborn while riding in your suburban chariot and compare that to the risk of infection while in an airplane. Hi OP: I've lived overseas and I know how it can feel that you want to come back to the USA for things that feel more "normal" in regards to your children. I had a daughter, but if I had a son, we probably would have chosen to cir. him. At least I think we would have. I'm not sure.

That being said, I really would suggest NOT flying back. It sounds like it would be a BIG stress on your family. And, once you get back, you'll still have to find someone to do the "snip" so to speak. My suggestion is to reach out to someone in the Jewish or Muslem community first and let them know that you are very concerned about the health risks according to non-cir. and would they be willing to do the proceedure. If not, I would ask them if THEY would recommend a doctor that they trust that they have worked with. I know that in RARE (very rare) instances when a religous cir. has gone wrong for whatever reason, they will refer the baby to a doctor for further work up. Which means they will have someone that they trust to work with.

Let's get something straight.

Circumcision is genital mutilation unless it is a procedure necessitated by medical complication such as adhesion etc...

It never stops blowing my mind those things that feel as "normal" as shapeless, culinary unappealing chocolate chips cookies in the USA to name a few:

Be able to drive, vote, go to war, own a gun, marry, consent to sexx, be criminally chargeable at 18 (or less) BUT NOT be allowed to drink alcohol

Put on a fully coverage (tops and bottom) bathing suit on a baby or young child on the beach

Circumcise your child because of some invented medical-necessity--BS or simply to "match" his father/brother

Make abortion an issue of public discussion when it is clearly the business of no one but yourself

Consider and (actually elect) a president/leader of the nation who does not believe in Evolution

This is crazy but what is more crazy is that I still live here and waste my time reading posts like OP's.

What is crazy is the fact that you think stating something based on no credible authority as fact makes it so. If circumcision were truly genital mutilation all of the OBs and Mohels that perform these surgeries would be sitting in jail. I understand that you don't approve, but sadly for you, nobody cares. Not to mention that you believe abortion is somehow less appropriate for public discussion than circumcision. I am pro choice, but the realities of what an abortion actually entails are not lost on me. If an abortion is a personal decision (and i believe that it is) - then a circumcision certainly is as well. And as a final point - if you are so outraged by how this country works and you can't think of why you continue to live in it, let me be the first to offer a solution to your problem: Get the F out. The less close minded and misguided people we have here the better off we will be.

You don't have to be a member of some mythical "intact community" to know that hauling your family with brand new baby half way around the world to chop up his penis so it "look's like Daddy's" is INSANE. What, is OP from Mississippi or something? Seriously. The circ rate in this country is falling dramatically, especially amongst educated people. Even within families who still do it, couples are becoming increasingly divided about it and many women regret their decision. There are very few families nowadays who would truly go out of their way, the way OP is proposing, just to make it happen.

I'm from Mississippi and all 3 of my sons are intact. And I disagree with what the OP is proposing in her post. But I do understand the sentiment -- only a very ignorant/misinformed person would do something like this. And there are a lot of those kinds of people in Mississippi (which is one of many reasons why I left).
