Xochital brand tortilla chips--the BEST EVER!!! They are thin and restaurant style, so, so yummy. I can't go back to regular after this. It's ruined me. They are so good. They're not outrageously expensive, may be $5 for a bag, but I remember seeing them and thinking no way would I pay that for tortilla chips. Bought them on sale one time and BAM, no others for me. I grew up in an area with amazing Mexican restaurants (unlike DC) and these remind me of what was served there. So authentic, so good.

Meat, fish, deli meats, (some) produce in winter when the farm markets don't have much, occasionally sushi or lunch from the hot-food bar if I am shopping near lunchtime.

What I do not buy at WF: their cakes. They are beautiful but overpriced and don't taste so great. Many of their baked goods, including breads, are subpar. Again, look good but just not worth the price/calories. We LOVE their rugelah, though. Yum.

posted earlier about the cava - the whole foods baquettes used to be great and then central offices had them bake to a specific color . Unless you're lucky the baquette is like a toddler baseball bat.

And, yes!, those wonderful, thin tortilla chips.

Sigh. I am there daily. One of the dangers of living only 2 blocks away and WAH.

I buy salads for lunch. I buy their NY strip, produce, milk, cereal, cheese, bread, EVERYTHING! It is the only store I shop at due to the convenience. Now I am spoiled. When I go in Giant or Safeway--all of that crappy, processed food, and commercial crap on the shelves annoys me. I also hate taking my kids into those places because all of that crap is marketed to kids.

Thankfully- Trader Joes is opening two blocks in the other direction in one month.

I am buying less and less there these days. I find Trader Joe's produce fresher and cheaper,

Then, you are the only person of the history of DCUM to find that.

There have been entire threads devoted to shitty TJ's produce that spoils immediately ....

I concur. TJs has shitty produce. I like TJs for cereals, granolas and dry foods (and wine!) that is half the price of Whole Foods.

I like/buy WFs produce and veggies; I don't find the price that different from SF & Giant.

Also buy yogurt and granola. Bought an apple pecan pound cake last week that was really good. I sometimes get bread/cakes like this to make as a part of weekend breakfast for the family.

I sometimes walk to WF for salads for lunch also.

I love TJs for so many things--but I can't count on their produce. I do buy some stuff there but you just never know until you can inspect it. Often things are on their last leg or are already gone.

^^These are my new favorite thing to buy at WholePaycheck. Unbleached waxed sandwich baggies. Better for the environment and I love the 1940's feel of the bags as you slip the items in. And the crinkly sound they make as you fold them. I know, weird. I staple them shut.

Not weird at all. I totally get that. My dad was a laborer and my mom always packed his sandwich and other foods for his lunch in wax paper. Very cool retro vibe.

Produce (buy whatever is on sale, as well as my favorites)
Cases of water (I love sparkling water, they have the best price because of the case discount)
Canned dog food (better price than the local pet food stores, high end brand)
Cereal (WF's 365 brand)
Dried bulk goods (lentils, quinoa, beans, barley, etc.) Organic, good quality
Frozen foods (Annie's, Dr. Praeger, etc.)
Bread (packed and sliced, I buy good organic whole wheat bread on sale and freeze several)
olive bar
yogurt (Wallaby)
most of my family's personal care products (shampoo, cond., gel, deodorant, toothpaste, floss, etc.)

You get 10% off any case you buy. It doesn't have to be pre-packaged as a case, you can take individual things and build a case up (you have to buy it all at once). Especially great deal when something is already on sale--you get the sale price and the 10% off. I do this for tea (usually a case is 6 boxes), dog food, water, floss, etc.

By my calculations the seltzer at Costco is wayyy cheaper.

The lunchmeat from the deli at WF is nitrite free and my dh eats at least a sandwich or 2 a day, hot dogs, yogurt, sausages.

You must live in Clarendon. I can't wait until the TJs opens too, my wallet can't take our frequent trips to WF for everything.
