The consensus on this board (per the other thread) seems to be that - in the lower schools - the range seems to be from 70-99+, with the big cluster around 80th percentile. (eg IQs between 113-125)

There are a handful of 98-99% kids in each grade (iqs 130-140). A profoundly gifted kid (150+) every few years.

The profile looks different in the Upper Schools/High Schools.

I'd say that's about right. You have basically echoed what the ERB testing service provides. They do graph ERB results in public and independent school, stanine the norms and juxtapose them against IQ. Based on the ERB results at my DC independent the bulk of the kids are in the bell curve 5-6 stanine , which corresponds to 80th percentile on IQ test.

A few are higher and a few are lower.

Suburban schools score next highest and nation wide public average is lowest of all three. Not that there aren't geniuses in public schools, just that the bell curve bulk of the kids are not in 80 % range, their 5th-6th stanine is in 50% range for IQ. just consult the ERB board to validate all the info on line at it is nationwide, not just DC.

how do the public schools get this data?

I am the OP of the other thread (the one this one is aimed at).

For the record I don't for one minute believe that DC private schools are mediocre. They are top schools that should be respected. They have shown their merits many times over with their results.

My point on the other thread is that parents shouldn't be complacent about their choices if their kid is found to be gifted (I'm not talking about profoundly gifted....just gifted 130-140). These private schools aren't meant to be considered gifted boutique programs which will cater to gifted kid's needs. Their aim is much broader than that and if you have an outlier you may need other accomodations for them.

I'm going to cross post this on the other thread as well....just for the record.

Oh please, I think we all have noticed that the parents applying to private schools are disproportionately the parents of kids with mild "special needs." Meaning, their DC can't really function in a larger classroom. Many of these kids have mild diagnoses like ADD, ADHA, sensory disorders, etc. That is why the parents need the smaller classes. I think this trend has started to create a climate of questioning amongst the parents of the kids without these issues. I have heard plenty of parents wonder why they are paying $30k per year to have their child in a class of 12 when 6 of the 12 have special needs that routinely distract the teacher.

Sounds to me, PP, like you may be struggling with your own educational deficit.

Explains the desire, need, and indeed, demand, for so much accommodation for tests and work product at these private schools ... most of which are mediocre educational institutions at best.

I do not have any statistics but I would bet the farm these private school children, and their parents and "steps", spend more billable psychiatric and psychoanalytical hours on couches and are the largest consumers of the mood alterating products of this blockbuster billion dollar western psychopharmacological "drug" industry.
