Speeding neighbor almost ran over my child tonight

OP, next time don't let your child get so far from you. You need to be a little more vigilant and not expect everyone else to do your job for you. That's your child and no one else will be as devastated as you if something were to happen.

I agree with one of the PPs-it was the dog's fault.

Perhaps OP lives in Franklin Park area of Mclean? There are no sidewalks and a handful of people drive like maniacs through the area. My husband had a "conversation" with one repeat offender and it hasn't happened since.

glad you aren't my "neighbor"

if you go 40 mph through a neighborhood, then I am glad an asshole like you is not my neighbor ...

Her child was 9 years old and on the grass.

I feel sorry for your child if you think that 50 feet is too far to be separated from a nine year old.

Anonymous wrote:I have had this feeling. It is very scary when cars drive fast past you and I don't think all drivers realize it. I even started parking my car on the side of the road, not my driveway, to 'narrow' the street and slow cars down. I also walk in the middle of the street sometimes (we have no sidewalks either), so when a car turns the corner, they can see me clear and easy. Often it is harder for drivers to see kids, so I am the one who makes myself visible. Most drivers slow down when they see me. My kids know the drill when I yell to move over. We have had several kids hit by cars over the years in our area. One was fatal.

Consider getting a speedbump or some other traffic calming solution.

A human speed bump? This motive is not apparent when we see neighbors walking in the middle of the road. In fact, we usually say, "what a bad role model she/he is walking in the middle of the road." Cars parked on the street instead of their driveway pose a safety risk to the elderly that walk and people who bike in our neighborhood because they have to go into the street to go around these cars. Why don't you have your county come in and review how safe the neighborhood is instead? I would like sidewalks for the safety of all our neighbors.

No need to feel sorry for her -- she's happy and healthy and doing fine. Apparently 50 feet was too far for the OP because she clearly couldn't handle the situation.

I still like the paper bag idea posted here a few months ago. Nothing like a cement block inside a paper bag to get them to slow down...or stop!

Wish she was my neighbor. Do the cops willingly set up the speed traps or are there other hoops to go through to get them to come out?

Really? Can we say helicopter parent? 50 feet is not far. How is she suppose to handle someone else who is in a CAR? Nevermind. I am sure you will have a "rational" solution to that as well. Well, rational to you.

I was thinking the same thing, this is not a toddler. OP, I have yelled at people speeding down my street, or the ones who are going so fast in a 25 MPH zone, the air coming off their car knocks down the "Kids at Play" Sign at the end of my driveway. Speeding has been a big problem in our neighborhood, and we too have a lot of kids. A few neighbors reached out to Fairfax County recently (or maybe it was VDOT), and they are going to do a speed study (we have to get signatures first, but we will) and then the results will determine whether they need to set up some speeding prevention measures.

Can you try calling the local police station and ask for speed limit signs to be put up on that street? Explain what almost happened to your child. Also do you have a HOA that you can send an email out to? Then the neighbor would also be receiving this email. Thirdly, I would be more concerned about your child than the dog and stand closer to your child always rather than your dog. Was your dog off the leash? Why did you have to wait for the dog to catch up?

This is an old thread, people.

SLOW DOWN YOUR NEIGHBORS!

Sounds like McLean. The neighbors are too stupid to know that by all the complaining they do, they could have a sidewalk and/or speed bump in there by now. The same neighbors who claim to play in the street - you're kidding right?

OP, I hear you, but you should be petitioning the neighbors for one or both of the above. DCUM serves no purpose in this regard.
