Schools and Education General Discussion

We had an older teacher last year for my middle son's K class and she was fabulous (McLean). The years of experience really showed in her ability to manage the class room - and my DS adored her.
One of the worst teachers one of our kids had was a first yr teacher - no prior teaching experience, no teaching degree - so don't knock the teachers with experience. |
| I'm getting my teaching degree and will be a new teacher in my late 40s -- worst of both worlds. I pity the kids who are going to get me!! |
| my first grader wanted the young newer teacher but got an older woman-she is close to retirement. While I love both of them, I think the older one is as much fun as the younger one but in a different way...she is more cheesy and very soft spoken and my son instantly loved her. The younger one was HIGH energy and always joking around-different styles that's all. I think that some older teachers have passed their prime and need to retire, while others have so much great experience-it is truly priceless. Same for the younger ones-many have so much energy and are eager/open to new ideas and have a great teaching style and of course others are in over their head. You have to take teachers as you would with other professions on an individual basis. |
not in my book The transition is hard, and - I won't lie - many career changers can't hack it. However, some of the BEST teachers are career changers! We have one who's been teaching for 12 years, and she's in her 50s. She was a SAHM for years before deciding to become an educator. Without her, our IB program would be nothing. Much luck to you! |
