Moving to Boston - Where to live?

Hey 8:52! No more yapping about how great Hingham/South Shore is. Let everyone keep raving about the North Shore & Metrowest.

10:49 - EYAH. How long has it been since you resided in the Boston area? 30 years? 40?

Winthrop or Norwell

Ew. Winthrop? Don't bother looking there, OP.

norwell is alright - decent schools and not too overpriced housing.

With your budget, look at Natick. It's not on the water, but you would have a better quality of life. You could afford a nice home/neighborhood with great schools. It's next to Wellesley and convenient to the train and T. It's also not a bad drive into downtown Boston; just hop on the turnpike.

How about Arlington (has Spy Pond)? Or Braintree (has Red Line plus Commuter Rail)? You could def. get something on your budget.

Some of the South Shore towns (and Metro West) have Commuter Rail but their viability depends on where you work IMO. The South Shore line dumps out at South Station (close to downtown) and the MetroWest one in the other side of downtown (further north of course!).

It is certainly different that school systems are town or city based there, not county based like here.

Belmont or Arlington - great towns, easy commute.

We live on the South Shore and some of these towns mentioned are not places I would ever want to live...just saying.

Your post is not useful to OP unless you provide more detail about the pros/cons of living in the places mentioned.

One of DH's best friend's from high school (he grew up in West Newton) lives in Hingham with his wife and two young children. They LOVE it. She is a pediatrician (in Hingham) and he is the head of the ER at Boston Medical.

They keep trying to get us to move up there- I'd do it, but my DH works in gov't relations, so we are pretty much stuck here.

Good luck to you all!

Newton and Hingham might be tough, OP. Honestly, it is an expensive area and that budget simply won't go as far as it would in the D.C. area. Maybe they don't want them up there, ha, ha....

Natick might be doable. The commuter rail is nice, clean, safe and quiet - NOT the Metro If you can find an affordable place, the commuter rail allows you to actually get work done while commuting into the city. People are really considerate - a HUGE change! They are just happier, in general, and it shows. You are in for a treat (seriously). Life is good, and it is a pleasant experience.

My college boyfriend grew up in Natick; he and his sibs went to public schools all the way through K-12 and all did very well in college and grad school admissions. After nearly 30 years I went back there recently for his mom's funeral and was amazed at how the town center had been transformed. It was kind of dumpy back then (or at least that was my impression, having grown up in California); now, it's really cute. OP, I think you'll really like New England; as a native Californian who came east for law school and stayed, I've always found New Englanders to be way more chill than folks in DC. Our third child is going to college next year and both DH and I are crossing our fingers that he'll go some place in New England so we can visit there more often.

Belmont and Arlington are pricey. Their Arlington is night and day compared to N VA's Arlington. Much, much nicer (and pricier) there!
