| 15:16: The "free speech" comment cracks me up. Clearly, you have no idea what you're talking about. You must also think that kids have a right to shout curse words in a public school classroom. There is no constitutional right to yell curse words at a public pool. The County can make reasonable rules limiting speech in the setting of the pool. |
You're the one that's funny. I have been to a lot of pools and never saw one that posted a rule about cursing. A school is an entirely different setting. You are a control freak and you really need to relax. |
| 16:02 -- I didn't say they have a rule about cursing. They may, or may not. I said there's no constitutional right to curse at a pool. Read the caselaw. And how am I a control freak? I didn't say anything to the kids at the pool (am not even the OP and haven't been in the situation -- my kids are too young to care yet about the language). I'm saying that when people say "there's free speech" to excuse this behavior, that person is poorly educated about the law. |
The person who made the free speech comment is poorly educated in general, not just about the law. |
No I'm not, you sillyhead. Technically I'm actually a lawyer But it is common usage to use the expression in the way that I did and it is, in fact, true that we have the right to curse and say what we want in public places unless there is a specific rule against cursing in a specific public location (schools would be a good example). To my knowledge, there is no law against cursing in a public pool. Apparently, all lawyers are supposed to be uptight control freaks like you when it comes to language and everything else. You need to let people exist around you and your kids without calling in the authorities. It's ridiculous behavior.

OP,
Try Wilson, there are more white people there and you might feel less threatened. Although the staff there is appallingly rude. |
You amaze me. First of all, why do you assume the kids were black? Secondly, you comment suggests that black parents don't care if their kids are "tough talking." That's quite a generalization. |
This attitude contributes to a lot of the problems many kids have today--adults who think just about anything goes because "I have a right" with no thought for others. Do we really need "a specific rule" for certain behaviors to be objectionable?! |
When they are cursing and talking the way the OP indicated, they aren't just a group of kids. They are obnoxious and if you are able to tolerate listening to this type of stuff at a public pool...be my guest. Funny how people get all up in arms when a leaf blower causes noise but act like it isn't a big deal when a bunch of kids are sitting around cursing and talking trash. And there is no way I wwould approach this group - bring it to management or leave. If they are crass enough to act that way in public you have no idea how they will act if they are called out. Obviously, there upbringing was subpar. |
|
Why is it then, that when I curse in public, I get a bunch of dirty looks? is it because I am held to "higher" standards than a bunch of teenagers?
Or is it that some parents feel that they are part of this village and oh so cool to be hanging with these bad boys, but heavne forbid that a 40 year old woman say - shit around my precios darling. Double standard. Deep down, you all know that you would hate to be in the situation descrobed by the OP. |
They will survive listening to a leaf blower, too. |

You have a college degree and a law degree? You should inquire about getting your money back. |
Teens at the Randolph pool (or Banneker Pool, or perhaps even the Upshur Pool) are going to be 80% black. My second comment didn't assume that black parents don't care if their kids are tough talking, but rather that the kids are out without their parents being around, and that if you are offended by the cursing, the correct course of action is to approach the kids and tell them you don't like it rather than calling in the pool manager to deal with the kids, who are, after all, just kids, not a scary gang. I meant the opposite of what you read into it. |
What are you talking about? Why would you curse around your children? I think people who curse have no imagination and/or have a lack of vocabulary skills. |
I'd have a hard time saying something to a group of 15-20 teens. My brother was assaulted by some teens on the NYC subway. Honestly, I'd probably just leave. |
