"Tithing is a good indicator of the level of faith of a person. Tithing is thus used as an indicator of how prepared a person is to receive temple covenants. "
Where did Jesus say this? |
Wow, how does this seem okay to anyone??? You want to sacrifice a good start on education for your child do that your extremely rich church gets a bigger chunk of your money? It's one thing to give up luxuries to support your church, but this ain't manicures and pedicures we're talking about. This is your child's well being. |
Seriously? Its preschool - its optional and yes, a luxury. Just like private school and SAT tutoring. Not everyone can afford this stuff. I think the child's well being will be just fine. |
Does the Mormon church run pre-k and afterschool programs? |
Of course not. The mormon church frowns on women working outside of the home.
To demand the same level of tithing from those who are barely able to meet their monthly obligations, and from those who are CEOs of multimillion dollar corporations (Marriott, Romney, the Franklin Covey guy) is just plain mean. It's a sacrifice for the poor to give up 10%, but that 10% is not as greatly appreciated as the hefty checks from those who can afford it, and who appreciate their tax break for charitable contributions. |
Preschool is a "luxury" the way high quality health care is a "luxury" - it is unaffordable to many, but so very important. Studies have shown, time and time again, the positive impact of attending preschool and the negative impact of not. For example http://www.tcrecord.org/Content.asp?ContentID=15440 And you really think this is less important than tithing 10%??? |
Are you really comfortable telling people how they should spend their money? |
I still want to know why the OP converted. What sold her on it? |
Doesn't seem like the Mormon conversion process involves a lot of instruction. |
Isn't that exactly what the Mormon church is doing??? ![]() |
Exactly. The "value add" for organized Christian churches is that you get an authority figure to tell you that Jesus didn't really mean what he said, and that you can "buy" an indulgence for only 10% of your income--just so long as you give it to the cuhrch! Pretty good scam. ![]() |
Still don't get the connection between JESUS and tithing. |
Correct me if I'm wrong but OP said that 10% was 19K? She makes (they make) 200K/yr. RIght? assuming net?
she can afford preschool and 10% if she wanted to. I take a more one-God approach to faith. There's a God. ALl religion is man made. If you want to do good, you must feel it in your heart. a begrudged 10% is not going to buy you God-love. a gladly given 1% likely will. Even better: Feed the hungry and house the homeless no matter who funds the thing. I'm not mormon but I'd feel comfortable saying I fully tithed if I did charity work and gave to a non-Mormon hunger and homlessness org. I'm FASCINATED with Mormons. I was raised mainstream Christian in a place with Catholics and Protestants and almost nothing else. I moved to a place with Jewish people and was fascinated with Judism for awhile. They I moved to a place where I worked with a lot of Indian people and was thus fascinated with the Hindu faith and some others similar. Now, i work wtih a few Mormons and that faith is my current fascination. I should be over it soon especially since I've read too many DCUM blogs on the topic. |
