Are you really suggesting there are no busy streets on the Hill? Hmm, let's see, off the top of my head there's 8th St, 14th St, 15th St, 17th St, parts of D St NE, C St NE, H St NE, Potomac Ave, Constitution, Independence, E. Capitol, and all of the state streets. Why even bother commenting about someplace you clearly know nothing about? |
Sure, they're allowed to plant there, but then they shouldn't get all bent out of shape if someone steps in it, either. It's not their personal space. |
I don't think they are actually getting bent out of shape. Is there another topic entitled, "Plant safety risk when people exit cars by stepping into flowerboxes"? |
| Seriously OP, count your blessings if your biggest headache is the fact that your neighbors are trying too hard to make the area look nice. Safety risk, really? How is stepping on a few plants a safety risk? And if your angst is about getting your kid out of the car on the street side, what are you going to do when it's time for #2? Or god forbid, you have to ride in the passenger seat? I guess you'll have to napalm the plants, shut down the street to thru traffic, or.... just move to the way burbs where you can get yourself a garage. |
OP here. If you don't agree that it's a problem, that's fine. But why assume that I'm making up the fact that these are large bushes and thick knee-high plants that are hard to just step on? Or, like another PP, that I live on a busy street? I really have no incentive to lie. I don't doubt that it may be different on other blocks, but I really was talking only about my particular block, and since you don't know where that is, you may as well just believe me. |
| Nobody believes you OP. They think you're a whiner. |
| Step on the plants and fence. |

OP
be a nice neighbour your kid will learn to walk. do not cause trouble. The world is not going to jump for your convenience just because you have a toddler in the car. Or have the father pick the kid and drop it off. Then you no longer need to worry about baby in car |

OP - I feel your annoyance, and understand it. But really, I think you need to chalk this up as one of thousands of "issues" you will encounter raising kids in an urban environment. There are some great things about raising kids downtown. There are also some not so great things. I think you're trying to swim upstream without a paddle here. If you live on Capitol Hill, there are going to be NUMEROUS times you will not be able to find a spot -- anywhere. That applies to everyone. But yes, it is EXTRA hard on you when you are lugging an 18 month old AND the groceries 4 blocks home. But that is the price you pay for living on Capitol Hill. If you don't like it, look for a parking space to BUY or rent (buying one may cost you $75,000!). Or consider taking public transportation.
Or, if you can't stomach the negatives about living in an urban environment... move to the suburbs. This is what I did 10 years ago (pre-kids) for a variety of other reasons, but I've never regretted it. Life is full of tough choices. Good luck. Parking in this city sucks everywhere. |
