Exactly right, just like people from Central and South America proudly refer to themselves as Hispanic or Latino, not as Spanish.

Not my South American in-laws. The entire extended family refers to themselves as Spanish because they don't want anyone to think their blood is mixed with the indigenous populations. They may be from Argentina, Peru and Bolivia but they are Spanish, not Hispanic or Latino.

If the family has been in South America for several generations, they are indeed Hispanic/Latino (as well as Spanish). They are in denial, but that's like Don Francisco saying he's not Hispanic because his parents were German-Jewish immigrants.

Race- white (descendants of Spaniards)
Nationality- Argentinean/Peruvian/Bolivian
Ethnicity- Hispanic/Latino

If you know anything about the Argentinians or Chileans then you know yes, many of them are pompous asses who are weirdly and overly proud/deluded? that they have no indigenous
or african ancestry. In many cases this is false, but they are obssessed with this. As far I can tell, their main claim to fame (Argentines, anyway) is that they all think they are related to various murderous Irishmen and or Chè Guevara.
Is your husband also a pompous ass who fears anyone mistakenly assuming his lineage has been tainted with savage blood or did he escape the madness?

horrible analogy. hispanic is still preferred by some groups, and nobody wants to be called a negro.

Really? Well, today I learned something on DCUM . I thought the preferred term was latino for men latina for women for everyone except race obsessed Argentines and Chileans. Which groups prefer "Hispanic"? I'm really just asking.

Some people do not like being called Hispanic, but calling someone Hispanic is not the same as calling someone Negro or Oriental.

Hispanic does not include people from Brazil. Hispanic means Spanish-speaking or of Spanish descent. White Latino/as may prefer this designation as it (somewhat) implies that they are not mixed with Native Americans or people of African descent.

Latino/a refers to people from Latin America either nationally (born in Latin America) or ethnically (born elsewhere but with Latin American ancestry), and does include people from Brazil (who speak Portuguese).

Spanish refers to either the language or people from Spain or descended from people from Spain. You would use it the same way you would use German-American or Irish-American or French-American.

Some Latino/as are white, biracial, multiracial, Asian, Native (in this case) American, or black just like some people everywhere are.

Are the darker people descendants of those who worked outdoors or near the sea (fishermen) and the fairer people descendants of those who lived farther away maybe near mountains? A friend of mine is Greek and she said this is why some Greeks are fair while others are dark. Or are the darker people of mixed heritage?

Slightly OT but many deny the African part of their heritage that's where the brown ususally comes from, but there is so much mixing it's impossible to sort it out. Someone sent me this link recently about the long history of Africans in mexico and peru, for example.

The question was about Spanish people, not Peruvians and Mexicans.

My mistake, but my point still stands for people from Central and South America.

Thanks

I really like it too, as it's very fitting. I am indeed very angry about our educational system and will do all I can to attempt to enlighten the masses.

Unfortunately, I can't take credit for it; some other PP called me Angry Teacher (abbreviated to AT) - not in a nice way, mind you, and it just sort of stuck!

Ok, fine. But not for Spanish people (as you called them in your post).

Your post proved OP correct. People use "Spanish" as a catch-all term for people who are not, in fact, Spanish.
Anonymous
No it didn't prove OP's point - I didn't call anyone Spanish - I misread the question.

Negro is the name of a race of people and it is not racist. African American, Hispanic, Latino/a, Korean American, etc., is hyphenated Americanism and, as the country is one big meltint pot, we should simply be Americans, as we once were.

Melting pot my ass. This country is a freaking salad with oil and water. In the end the mix up is very very little.
