I See a Red Door and I Want To Paint It Black...

I hear that song and think of that show Tour of Duty that used it for the theme song. Spent the day at a conference talking about helping veterans. Chatted with feds who said the newbie members of Congress are totally clueless and that things are so bizarre no one can predict what will happen with anything. Listened to vets and active duty military talk about their predicament and strangely they are more upbeat, positive and optimistic than the feds who are running our world. I see a red door and I want to paint it black.

I laid a divorcee in new york city,
I had to put up some kind of a fight.
The lady then she covered me with roses,
She blew my nose and then she blew my mind.

I would hit a "like" button if available.

I had goose bumps reading this thread. I am 39. If you asked me about the Stones, I would say I was a fan but don't listen to their music much. But reading all of these lyrics, and having the music be an inner soundtrack in my head all day was something. Makes me want to call my college roomate, invite her over, and dance to Honkey Tonk Woman.

Things are different today
I hear every mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down.

I made an instant cake, and defrosted a frozen steak this week. I could use a little yellow pill.

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

Hmm, hmm, hmm...

I wanna see it painted black, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Yeah

When the wind blows and the rain feels cold
With a head full of snow
With a head full of snow
In the window there's a face you know
Don't the nights pass slow
Don't the nights pass slow

The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind
Just another mad mad day on the road
I am just living to be lying by your side
But Im just about a moonlight mile on down the road

Made a rag pile of my shiny clothes
Gonna warm my bones
Gonna warm my bones
I got silence on my radio
Let the air waves flow
Let the air waves flow

Oh Im sleeping under strange strange skies
Just another mad mad day on the road
My dreams is fading down the railway line
Im just about a moonlight mile down the road

Im hiding sister and Im dreaming
Im riding down your moonlight mile
Im hiding baby and Im dreaming
Im riding down your moonlight mile
Im riding down you moonlight mile

Let it go now, come on up babe
Yeah, let it go now
Yeah, flow now baby
Yeah move on now yeah

Yeah, Im coming home
Cause, Im just about a moonlight mile on down the road
Down the road, down the road

Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Ooh, see the fire is sweepin'
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost its way

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

The floods is threat'ning
My very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

...Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
Uh oh, David Byrne's trying to break in here...

I can't resist, the lyrics are too righteous!

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
wife
And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

Anonymous wrote:Wasn't that song written about the death of Brian Jones?

It was kind of a dark message, but it was always one of my favorite songs. What made you think of this tonight?

BTW, for any one out there who is less than eighty or you just don't the know the story, Brian Jones was one of the founding members of the Rolling Stones. He was found dead floating in a swimming pool.

The answer is no. it was released on Beggar's Banquet - before Brian died and he did backup vocals on it. I actually recently saw footage of the recording of the song (I'm the one who just read KR's book "Life" and am a little obsessed) and it's so funny to watch them doing it. Mick is on one side of a screen singing and the others are on the other side all gathered around a microphone sing "oooh, ooh" into it. Not at all what you would expect! I just finished Marianne Faithfull's bio (see, I am obsessed) and she said Mick wrote it after reading a book she gave him about a devil-like character.

According to Keith Richards, many of their songs really didn't have the deep meanings that everyone attributes to them. Jumping Jack Flash is not about heroin, rather it is about Keith's gardner!

The circumstances behind Brian's death will forever be debated. Marianne places a lot of blame on Keith and Mick for the way they treated him. Keith says it was probably a suicide but just as likely that he pissed someone off (Brian was known to be quite an asshole) and he was killed.

Any more questions?

Wow . . . thanks for thank clarification about Paint it Black. I've been under that misconception for decades. I've also heard Keith Richards say that Jumping Jack Flash was about the gardner, but I don't believe him. I think they were just as disgusting as we were in college. I think it's about lighting lighting your farts on fire. Go ahead flame away at me . . . literally flame away at me. I'm not lying, you can light your farts on fire.

The GnR version of Sympathy ain't bad. How about Devos' cover of Satisfaction? What Stone's covers do you like most?

I'm 39 years old and grew up listening to the stones, thanks in part two having two older sisters. But I have to admit that when I saw this thread title, my first thought was that someone here had a bad experience at Elizabeth Arden Red Door salon and was complaining about it.
