| I’d stay away from Glen Haven and possibly stretch to upper Silver Spring to Cannon road. We couldn’t afford Woodlin, Flora Singer, OTES or Takoma Park ES but we didn’t want to send our children to Glen Haven or any of the schools in Wheaton. Cannon Road is an untold gem. I’d visit the school. We also looked at Stonegate ES (non title I) |
My kids aren't at Glen Haven, and I'm sure your school is fine as well, but on what basis are you telling strangers to "stay away" from a school that has higher test scores than the school you are recommending. Like I say, I'm sure Cannon Road is fine, but Glen Haven has better scores, and is in a much more convenient neighborhood for most DCUM families. I can't imagine why you would think people would avoid it to commute further away for a school with weaker scores. |
What was your specific experience at Glen Haven that makes you not recommend it? |
Ditto. There is a lot of negative perception out there, and honestly when I drove around the neighborhoods it didn't have as good a feel as those nearer to some of the other elementary schools, so for CURRENT parents, what are your experiences? |
Could you post a link of where you are pulling this data? Great schools and such is really subjective. Do you have PARCC data? |
Cannon Road: http://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/ParccResults.aspx?PV=71:3:15:0310:3:N:0:13:1:1:0:1:1:2:3 Glen Haven: http://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/ParccResults.aspx?PV=71:3:15:0767:3:N:0:13:1:1:0:1:1:2:3 If we take the 3rd Grade English scores, which is a random metric but is on the first page, we can see that Cannon Road had about 17 percent of kids meet or exceed standards, whereas Glen Haven had 47 percent. But let's say that 3rd grade scores are a bad metric because it counts all the kids who later leave for gifted centers. So let's look at 5th grade math scores for both. Cannon Road had 41 percent meet or exceed standards, and Glen Haven had 58 percent meet or exceed. Note also that Cannon Road had fewer than 5% of kids exceed, which means it was statistically not reportable. Again, I'm sure Cannon Road is fine. My own kids are at a school that falls between Glen Haven and Cannon Road in terms of those particular scores, and my kids are doing great there. But I really object to PP coming on and warning people off a school that actually has really good test scores, and where families seem to be happy. Particularly in order to recommend a school with lower scores. |
| The new principal is going to be amazing. She’ll make it a blue ribbon school I bet. I used to work with her!! |
|
What changes specifically would she institute that would improve the school? |
Isn't that high turnover to get a new principal every few years? |
Yup, I think it predates Flora Singer! But great news that Glen Haven has gotten so much better. |
| Everyone I have talked to in my neighborhood says great things about glen Haven and we are planning on sending our kids there too |
|
And I don't know why someone is trying to promote cannon road ES. It seems worse in every metric.
I thought it was going to be a case of some racist recommending it for more white people or something but it it's 90% non white |
| I certainly hope Glen Haven has improved. I worked there 6 years ago and couldn't wait to get the h*ll out. Many violent kids and an inept principal who apparently was forced out. |
What's your problem? The principal who left was nominated for Washington Post principal of the year and the school has improved its test scores I did hear that a lot of teachers had a hard time with her new approach, mostly the older ones who were kind of set in their ways and didn't want extra accountability. I guess you were one of them |
