Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
My DS started crawling at the end of eight months. He can now do it very well at nine months. Seven months is too early to worry.

| Don't freak out. My son went from showing no signs to attemting to crawl - to one day just crawling across the floor. Some kids just think about what they are going to do for a long time and then just do it. I don't think he crawled until 9 months - but then he could really really crawl fast! |

DS is in daycare, so I get to see a whole room of infants and how they develop. crawling is so variable. there's one baby girl in the infant room who is 9 months, and her mode of transportation is rolling. she just rolls and rolls and doesn't seem interested in crawling. no big deal. my DS started off crawling by doing an army crawl on his stomach. he got pretty fast, too. I was so worried that he wasn't crawling on his hands and knees, especially when other babies his age were crawling that way. after a month of army crawling, he finally started crawling on his hands and knees. after that experience, I've tried to keep in mind that babies develop according to their own schedules.
it's easy for us to freak out as first-time moms, but as long as the doc isn't concerned, it's all good! |
| i haven't read this whole thread but wanted to point out that there are plenty of kids that never crawl, just begin walking. My first army crawled very briefly @10 months and began walking shortly thereafter. |
| Only show concern if your child is not hitting other milestones. My #1 DS had hypotonicity which was later discovered to be due to a medical condition and he army crawled on his own for some time (but certainly not at 7 months-more like 9 months), then with PT he crawled regularly and then began walking on his own at 14 months of age. Do not fret |
Parents are the ones that cause us the most stress in milestones. Apparently I walked, talked, crawled, read, sang, and was potty trained by 10 months. I think our parents forget. Alot of my friends complain about this. Dont worry. |

7 months is early, I think. Esp for girls. If your child doesn't show any signs of other motor delays - not grasping for instance, she is probably fine. You say she sits and stands, so it sounds like she's OK.
Patience. It will come. And then you'll miss these days. |
Agreed. Try very hard to manage your anxiety and enjoy the present. There's a wide range of "normal" here and your baby will crawl when he's ready. The worst thing you can do is pressure him to perform on your timetable. Your doctor will let you know at the next visit (usually 9 months) if there's a problem. (That's still pretty early for crawling, by the way.) |

My first didn't crawl (didn't army crawl, nothing -- cruised at 11 months), and my second shows no interest at 9 mos. My first is now 3 yo and does everything he's supposed to; he figured out how to crawl months after he walked. He's also exceedingly verbal and not nearly as high-activity as most other boys his age. My second seems to be the same way -- lots of babbling, long attention span, happy to sit and tear up a magazine for half an hour.
So as long as your child's development seems normal overall -- babbling, sitting unsupported, developing pincer grip, etc. -- I wouldn't worry if she never crawls. That said, she probably will crawl, and you'll be thinking back on your current worry and wondering why you didn't enjoy the sedentary time. |
