missed miscarriage at 9 weeks - options

For what it's worth, if you're worried about scarring, choose to be awake during the procedure. Sometimes surgeons are not as gentle if the patient is unconscious. (You don't like to think that, and I am sure your doctor is very careful, but to be on the safe side...)

I chose to be fully conscious (no sedatives or anything) for a D&C I had 10 years ago. It took less than five minutes and the ob/gyn was very supportive. I won't lie - having your uterus vacuumed out bites big time. But it was very bearable.

I was told that if you are awake for the procedure, you might find it uncomfortable and start to squirm or twitch. It's like operating on a moving patient and can cause even more damage.

I had a missed miscarriage in Nov'08 after 3 years of trying to get pregnant and multiple IUI/IVF cycles (around 8 weeks). Not only was it devastating but my doctor recommended to wait for my body to terminate the pregnancy. It was a nightmare - I waited for almost 4 weeks and not only nothing happened but my HCG levels kept going up instead of down. I felt miserable everyday going to work and thinking there was a dead fetus inside of me and just felt like crying all day long. I finally had a D&C - wish I had done it as soon as I found out. I still had a considerable amount of bleeding and very heavy cramps for a couple of days but at least it was over.
The good news is that when I was recovering from the miscarriage (still really sad and not really trying), I got pregnant without any treatments before my period even returned in Jan'09. I have a wonderful 14 month boy and am pregnant again! (I'm 38)

I had a missed miscarriage discovered at 11 1/2 weeks but the baby measured around 9 1/2 weeks. I elected a D&C for the following reasons: 1. It had already been almost 2 weeks and my body had no idea it had passed and I didn't know how long it would take for my body to recognize the loss 2. I was ready to try again 3. I have a young child and I didn't want to be surprised by when the baby passed. 4. I wanted to do testing on the fetus
The D&C was pretty fast and painless. My doctor gave me medicine before hand to help me dilate and reduce the amount of pressure/damage to my cervix. Recovery was pretty fast and painless. My doctor told me to wait two cycles after the D&C but I told her I was ready to start early and she said to definitely wait one cycle for the hormone levels to drop. I got pregnant two weeks after my first cycle and just delivered a healthy baby boy. Good luck.

OP, I'm not sure if you've made your decision yet, but I'm sorry for your loss and hope you've found some good advice here. I had a d&c on Friday and besides the emotional pain, the physical pain is minimal. I'm eager to start trying again and that's why I chose this option. My body did not seem to be getting the message about the baby and I could not just wait and wait. Also, part of me was scared to naturally m/c over Christmas.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories. It sucks that so many of us have gone through this but I'm happy to hear the stories about successful pregnancies after a m/c.

Perhaps it is different at 9 weeks, but I had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks and waited to go into labor. It was awful andthe worst part was after pushing out baby and being in tremendous pain I had to still have a d & c because tissue remained. I still have flashes back to that night - a d & c is much more humane. I got pregnant with my dc several months later and waited largely to heal emotionally.

OP here. I completely second this sentiment. I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. It also makes me so happy to hear about the successful pregnancies - I'm happy for all those who had successes and it gives me hope.

I chose to do Cytotec. I took it on Friday, and started bleeding about 5 hours later. I'm still bleeding, but it seems to be slowing down. I had been worried about pain from the previous posts (and in fact my provider warned me that there could be a lot of pain), but there has been very little, surprisingly.

To the immediate PP, I can absolutely see that a D&C is a very humane option. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that awful experience.

OP, I also started Cytotech for a missed miscarriage that started at 6 weeks, but I learned about at 9 weeks. I took it on Friday, little pain, some bleeding. The bleeding is nearing end, but I am worried about remaining tissue. I will go in for a hormone test on Thursday. Are you having a follow-up vaginal u/s? I wonder if I should request that. Also, when do you plan on trying again - after one cycle?
