Someone submitted their two week notice to me and stopped working. I shut down his access to everything and handed him his notice. No work equals no pay. Maybe OP works a job that is not as easily tracked. But, not everyone is going to tolerate an employee expecting a paycheck for nothing. So, if OP needs her job and/or references, not submitting deliverables or otherwise not working isn't a good strategy.

That's what the nodding and smiling is for! "Working on it, boss!" Then forward some emails, then back to job search. "Gosh it's so hard keeping up with the workload of such an amazing worker as Vacation Larla! No wonder you fired me! Trying my best, boss!" And back to job search.

Op thank you for this post! Has made me smile!!

+1. This should do it. If your boss presses I'd tell him that you'd be happy to extend your separation date and start of severance (if applicable) to handle Vacation Vick's workload while he's gone and then start your closeout. Be polite and professional. He should get the picture.

Op I have done that. Ugh. He vaguely threatened me ‘BOSS (above him) says you’re being paid to work’.

I had a coworker who gave his 2 week notice and then spent the last two weeks making multiple copies of existing files and dumping them in a big mess as a FU to our boss. When she tried to talk to him about where to find certain files, he would start talking about how much his hemorrhoids were bothering him in great detail!

This request also feels bitter to me given I was chosen as the one to be laid off in my group, while others were retained, including one (younger) employee who is going on vacation for two weeks and will be entirely off line- something I would essentially never do.

He seems to want me to handle her work while she’s out.

Your boss doesn't think the same, so instead of focusing on transitioning, focus on the work they want you to do.

Why? He’s not really her boss anymore

I guess it depends on who she wants to get a future recommendation from.

Take a two-week vacation and be done with the place. Never go back. If you have to be at work, plan your vacations or search for fun things online.
