W&L

As far as admissions, showing interest is key. Sit for the interview, on campus if possible. Apply early if possible. All these things should greatly increase your odds.

DD is a current Junior there. The professors/classes are amazing. It was her first choice (she had the stats for T20 schools).

Here is what she did: Showed a lot of demonstrated interest (Campus tour, asked to have them match her up with a current student to talk to, Interacted with the AO for our region (asked very specific questions that couldn’t be found on the website), tried to do some of the online info sessions they offered and did the optional interview). Most of all she applied ED. They are need blind and all needs met plus they give 10% of the incoming class full ride scholarships(Johnson). So run the Estimated cost calculator and if the numbers are affordable, apply ED.

It would also help if your son isn’t a business major as that is a really popular major there. Pick a humanities major. like history. My daughter initially was a humanities major but changed her mind to business sophomore year. It was really easy to switch. The earliest you declare a major is Spring Semester Sophomore year.

Great advice.

But Johnsons only go to 44 students. Cost is $95,500, and that does not include Greek membership. W&L is 75% Greek, which was a huge turn-off to our kid. Greek is so expected at W&L that it includes anticipated fees on its regular admissions page. W&L also has awful diversity figures, as well, at only 4.3-5% black.

44 is 10% of a class, which is much, much higher on a percentage basis than most schools.

This equates to major class and DEI segregation on campus as a note.

My view is that it adds more diversity by having super high achievers mixed in.

Not true, from firsthand experience, completely separate worlds on campus.

Definitely not my kid’s experience there. Her friend group is very diverse. Now there may be a small group of students who isolate themselves(as in any school) but the majority of the main student body is not like that.

Almost everyone at the school cares about their grades and is driven to do well. They are not a bunch of strivers. They are very intelligent kids who are very collaborative. It is a work hard play hard type of place. There aren’t a bunch of kids leaving due too much partying. There are not a bunch transferring out. The school has one of the highest 1st year retention rates (97%) and 4-year graduation rates (92.8%) when compared to other schools (Including all the T20s). The stats speak for themselves.

The W&L from today is very different from the W&L from the 80s and 90’s.

so the merit scholarship kids are... Asian? poor? ??
how does the Johnson scholarship lead to separate worlds?

No non-white southern blue blood would set foot on campus without a full ride, no Asian or other diversity. It is the only way to get diversity on campus. Don't kid yourself. Julie Shin from San Francisco would not want to spent 4 years there without a full ride.

Sure it is.

I attended on a Johnson scholarship in the 80s and am regularly in the area now because my family has a house in the mountains nearby. It’s definitely very, very different than when I attended. Not saying it’s a beacon of tolerance and diversity, but it’s come a very long way.

My UVA son was recently talking about the cocaine parties at W&L that some
UVA kids drive to attend.
Apparently several frats throw parties around a coke theme.

UVA kids love coke

Drugs have always been a thing there with the popular frats/sororities. The girls were wild to the point where some left because their parents had enough. I know one who was pulled out and deposited at Swanee.
