Is Dartmouth basically a larger LAC? How does it compare to…

The Ivy League is an athletic conference, nothing more. It is also about 75 years old. The top schools of the Ivy league aren't the best schools either, they are merely the wealthiest.

Copium!

The idea that somehow the eight midsize private schools in the northeastern part of the country decided in 1954 to join arms and create their own athletic conference after which they would also be deemed the best 8 schools in the country is beyond stupid. Just read that back, it makes zero sense. The only significant differentiation between the HYP and the rest of the top 20 is their wealth.

Cornell is a state school.

In case this gets misconstrued as an attempt to bash Dartmouth/LACs, our DC is actually interested in LACs (Bowdoin, Williams, Swarthmore, etc.) but wondering if there is a slightly larger version that shares the same undergraduate focus, intellectual vibe and discussion-based learning.

If you want a bigger LAC, also look at Claremont colleges. (They are more integrated than Amherst 5 college consortium.)

Four.

Dartmouth is a Bucknell and Emory wannabe. Nothing compares to those two.

I have a kid at Dartmouth and another recruited at Amherst so we got to know it well. They are NOTHING alike.

The top NESCACs are much stronger academically.

I hope you’re joking. I’m not “Emory mom” even though I have a kid at Emory. Dartmouth hands down. But that’s just me- I loved the remote location and classic New England village look. Emory is great in its own way. However I don’t see a lot of overlap between Emory and Duke.

Wait. I thought Bowdoin was "too easy".

I can't keep up with which school we're hating on today.

Above poster- I meant Emory and Dartmouth.

I do not think Dartmouth is a larger LAC. There are lots of MS and PhD students. The professors all focus on publishing and research careers, wile LAC has no PhD and professors do more research with undergraduates.

How many departments at Dartmouth have grad programs? How many don’t?

Wannabes from SLACs run wild only on this forum. It’s pathetic.

Pretty sure that isn’t the case.
