Really depends on how much money you have.

Just because you can throw money away, doesn’t mean it’s worth it.

Everyone’s experience is different, so you can’t say it’s not worth it just because it’s expensive either.

Worth is a subjective term.
Toyota could be very worth it to you, but not Lexus.
Lexus could be very worth it to someone, but not Bentley.

You actually can.

You can say I had money to throw away,it’s not worth $400k but we had the money to throw away.

But you have to show a value added with respect to the cost.

College is not worth $400k .. you don’t increase in value for the investment. It’s waste of money but some people have money to waste.

There is no value to having a Bentley it’s for your ego.

Yeah, for some people, no school is worth $400K.

So you should decide based on your own values and beliefs. There’s no need to judge or question other people’s decisions.

No school is worth $100,000 a year. And even the Harvard and Yale students that don’t need financial aid will often have outstanding merit scholarships at slightly lower ranked schools that make them a better choice. But given how high stock market and real estate valuations are these days, there are a lot of families that can swing $100,000 for college.

And BU is very appealing for certain students. It’s a solid school in most fields and it’s located in the middle of Boston, which is probably the best city in the world to go to college. You can walk everywhere from BU. Fenway Park and Back Bay are your backyard. And living in a brownstone next to the Charles River is pretty nice for most students, once they get past that monstrosity on commonwealth where most freshmen live. But I hear that’s been upgraded recently so maybe it’s better now.

It’s not a surprise that even with their price tag they get about a 100,000 applicants. There are very few private universities that get more applicants. It’s like NYU. Lots of people want to be at a solid school in the middle of NYC or Boston.

But but value is also a subjective term.

Something valuable to you might be trash for someone else, and vice versa.

That’s not really a thing just a marketing ploy by buy nothing groups.

BU engineering would be more worth/valuable to me than art history from Harvard Yale.

It’s highly doubtful that for most areas of study BU is worth more than twice the price of UMass. Both are well regarded schools, and their graduates do well. Unless there’s a specific area of study in question, it comes down to factors like location. The BU “difference”, if any, is certainly not worth placing substantial financial stress on a family.

Like others have noted, BU worth it for only very specific programs. For the vast majority of majors, no difference between BU and U Mass.

If money is of any concern, go to U Mass. Save the money for investing, grad school, rent or any of the many expenses that come up for college grads. Otherwise, choosing BU now could mean choosing to live at home in 4 years.

Could be worth it for students wanting to get away from their geographic home. But most urban/cities and regions have a school like a 'BU' that doesn't require moving from let's say Alabama just to attend BU. Northern California, Southwest USA and Southern CA, DC region, Midwest, Texas, Southeast USA, Pacific NW, Florida..
