Rochester and Case Western comparison

Our child picked Rochester over CWRU. Merit money was the same. We liked both campuses. The decision came down to the difference in the admissions systems. With CWRU, it felt like they were implementing a yield-management strategy. With Rochester, he felt like they actually wanted him to attend.

Yes feels like Case leans a bit too heavily on yield management but I think Case tends to offer more generous merit scholarships than Rochester. DC looked at Case and Rochester this cycle, so I dug into the numbers. Case seems more generous- 70%+ of admits get merit, averaging about $25–30K/year vs Rochester where roughly half get merit and the average is ~$15K/year. DC ended up applying only to Case (not Rochester) and got $42K/year merit in the EA round- definitely felt like they wanted my kid.

$42 a year in merit? Yes, I would say that they wanted your kid PP!
Case is very generous with merit to all students but $42K is definitely on the higher side.

My kid had the same experience. $42K at Case and Rochester offered DC $7K. They bumped it up to $9K after we appealed.

DC is an outstanding student with extremely high stats including a perfect SAT score, 10 AP exams with all 5s, and a national award in a niche EC.
Rochester was their first choice but we could not pay for it.

Ultimately DC went to elsewhere, not to Case, even though it is a great school.

Both are excellent schools and kids can go on to do whatever they want if they do well. For my kid the (almost) open curriculum at Rochester was the deal breaker despite a lot more merit money from case.

FWIW, for the current cycle my kid was offered $17k/yr by UR and $34k/yr by Case.
