Will APS close on 4/21?

Yes, if it’s a hardship for you email the board. It’s worked in the past

I’m all for it. Spring is such a busy and stressful time for my high schooler. A bonus day off helps tremendously.

Well gee, if your HS kid needs a mental health day, let’s certainly shut down all the schools and make every parent of K-5 kid(s) rearrange their schedules and/or pay for backup camp so your kid can nap and have some me time. 🙄

Oh please. All I said was random days off are good for some high schoolers. And get a grip. Every parent with a high schooler who benefits use to have little ones who were inconvenienced by APS.

We need to get the polling centers out of the schools. There are rec centers and libraries all over this county, it’s time we start using them for government matters and start using schools for educating kids.

Its actually a terrible time off for HS kids. This is AP Exam prep time, they'll lose a day of prep - for kids taking 3-4 exams, this is not good.

What are you talking about? They can spend the whole day studying for APs. It's a gift.

Unless they need help from their teachers, who will have training all day

Studying at home is not even remotely the same as in class prep.

The number of half days and weather closures or just-for-fun closures has been the most surprising thing to me. I don't remember having so many days off or short days as a kid but APS is just racking them up.

If they are going to close school on the 21st, they should switch the half day on the 22nd to a full day (but they won't). APS fundamentally does not prioritize having 5 day school weeks. As long as they meet the minimum number of school days in a year, anything else will be prioritized above missing a random day of school.

Consider considering that the board is full of non-teachers I guarantee they haven’t even thought of that. They also haven’t thought of all the things that will be canceled or reschedule rescheduled due to this change, and they don’t care at all

Isn’t switching the block schedule days something principals can do on their own?

Yes it sure is. Each school sets their own schedule. Schedules can be adjusted. Not a big deal.

Going virtual for a day would solve this whole thing. Too bad that triggers the APEs though.

This is why we can't have nice things.

That is not true. Principals don't switch up schedules (AP here)

They already use libraries and rec centers in Arlington as polling places where they can. Arlington has 54 precincts - there aren't enough rec centers and libraries even if you used them all (and they are not all suitable to use).

If they ever try to have virtual school again, my children will not be attending. Total waste of time, no thanks.

Just to flag, the 22nd was already changed to a full day for Elementary and Middle School kids. (It's still a half day for high school, and recognize you may be commenting as the parent of a high schooler, but adding this in case it is helpful to someone out there!)

Why are there so many precincts? Is there a law behind it or is it just what we've always done? My precinct is always deserted on election day, especially now that we have early in person voting available for so many days.

I agree with the high school parent. It’s the wisdom of understanding that the days are long, but the years are so short. One day off school (or work, I get it!) is not the end of the world. Enjoy it and do something fun. It’ll be gone so fast!

It’s perspective. It’s also not new. These things happen. Make some lemonade!
