Nail upkeet

Do you understand the important difference between healthcare, where you take care of your health, and modifying one's external appearance? Your nails won't be healthier if you do more manicures and mess around with your cuticles (never mess around with your cuticles, you'll become more prone to infections).

Eat clean, exercise moderately, sleep, hydrate, moisturize your hands (and nails), and make sure you're not vitamin or mineral-deficient.

I really dont think YOU understood what OP meant.

OP here. Agreed. I apparently hit a nerve with the pp.

I will usually polish my fingernails right before I go to bed.
That way - they can simply dry overnight as I sleep. 😴

I think unless you get a Gel manicure 💅🏼 done professionally, chipping in polish is just a given.
Even with expensive nail polishes.

Which is sooo bad for your nails.

Do you ever go without doing your nails? Give them a chance to breathe?

Stop this nonsense. A bit of polish isn't doing anything bad to your nails. Your nails don't need to breathe.

I think everyone should give their nails a break every now and then since constantly having them polished is not healthy.

When I polish my nails a lot I notice that they feel weak + soft and even split.

No, it's important to break the myth that women need to "perfect" their appearance as part of "self-care". If it makes you happy to polish your nails, great, do that. But it's not good for your nail health. Yes, nails need a break from polish to stay strong. That is well-known.

I didn't know anyone does that. Doesn't it weaken the nail?

Yes, it does.

I use dazzle dry and do them during long zoom calls. Lasts about a week.

When do you find time to paint your nails? Every time I think about painting them I realize I have things to do that prevent me from giving them time to dry.

How do you make the polish last? I had a manicure on Thursday. Yesterday I chipped the tip and fixed it. Today I chipped another tip and fixed it. I’m lucky if I get 3 or 4 days out of polish. Am I just too hard on my hands?

Use Dazzle Dry polish (specific brand, not everywhere carries it) at the salon. It’s regular polish (not gel) but it’s stays on very well. I get two weeks minimum out of it. I only get my nails done every two months or so. Dazzle Dry is worth the money without destroying your nails like gel manicures.

I use the Dazzle Dry nail prep (which I think is essentially just rubbing alcohol), and the Dazzle Dry base coat. I’m able to get long wear doing that with my regular polish and top coat over it. I get a little tip wear as time goes on but just touch up the tips without redoing the whole nail. I can get about a week and a half of wear if I do this, versus a few days with a regular base coat. YMMV.

I was on a Dazzle Dry manicure kick for a couple of months, and it did a number on my nails - it’s not as harsh as a gel manicure (esp because your nails don’t need to be pumiced to put the polish on) but when the polish peels/chips (which on me it starts to do in under 2 weeks), it peels off the top layer of my nailbed, too. I’ve opted to get regular manicures but only use light polish, so chips aren’t as noticeable.

Just buy better hand and cuticle creams. Hands and nails need to look clean and healthy, not artificially decorated with acrylic, colors and jewels.

Yes, it does.

My nails are hard and healthy. I buff, shine, and oil. But: if I skimp on nutrition, they do soften. Lots of dark, leafy greens make a huge difference for me.

I have been using all kinds of things from the Londontown Kur line - the nail cream, cuticle oil, nail strengthener, conditioning remover, etc. They have 'polishes' but I rarely use them.

My nails are healthier than they have ever been. I have given up on gel, SNS, etc. The removal processes destroys my nails.

That's your nails. That's not my nails or so many other women.
