Pp here. Thank you for clarifying that. I did not know that. |
It’s 6 hours from bell to bell. Recess counts. I’m not sure about lunch. |
Sorry. PP here. I meant 6 hours and 45 minutes from bell to bell. |
Which ES is having recess on delayed opening days? Ours, and a few others I know of, never have it on late start and early release days. |
I’ve heard anywhere from 10-13 snow days built in to the calendar. That means a maximum of 6 hour per day are counted. If Reid popped in and announced that we actually have TWENTY extra days built into the calendar, the calls for calendar reform would be even more fierce. Like why would you even schedule 180 days in the first place? |
| when parents control keeping their kids in school and not checking them out at all hours of the school day, the days we have lost to inclement weather or religious holidays are still less than those skip+unexcused absences+cuts+cou+sick days kids get away with and still pass the school year: that is ridiculous. |
They started on August 18, don't end till June 17 and elementary schools ONLY have 3 cushion hours left? That must be some masterful planning FCPS! Get rid of both early releases in April and May and open on April 10 with the school planning moved to April 21! |

Everyone acting like these teacher workdays are where they are for an actual reason relating to the teachers' needs. Nah. Any workdays not tied to the end of the quarter or beginning/end of the school year are specifically being used for giving a cultural, religious, or federal day off without calling it that. Stop blaming teacher workdays for the calendar. We know they don't belong randomly in the middle of the week in the middle of the quarter. We don't need them then either. They're just a cover for the school board's desire to give everybody everything.
TW 9/9 - Special election TW 10/13 - Indigenous People Day TW 2/17 - Lunar New Year SP 4/6 - Easter Monday (although this coincides with the end of the quarter so SHOULD be a TW, not an SP and the one that follows on Friday that week should have been right after it on Tuesday) TW 4/10 - Orthodox Good Friday TW/PD 4/21 - Special election TW 5/26 - sandwiched between Memorial Day and Eid al-Adha so we wouldn't come back for one day and then be off again for another religious holiday. And actually, there's only supposed to be 15 additional teacher work days and they've got 16 scheduled AND just added another one. So now we're up to 17. So, that's annoying too. |
I agree with you on most of that, but where we really need a TW, at least at the ES level, is when grades are due for the fourth quarter. That would be 1.5-2 weeks before the last day of school. It makes no sense to me why there is never one set aside for 4th quarter grading, especially when the marks are doubled with the final grades. |
