Books that are between graphic novels and traditional books

It sounds like you've gotten some good suggestions already. I don't have a specific book or series suggestion, but a different approach....

I suggest taking your child to the library or a bookstore and letting them pick out 1-2 new books with the stipulation that they must be something different, not a graphic novel. You could enlist the help of a librarian or a staff member at the bookstore to help guide your child to explore some different books that might interest them....

I always have the BEST success trying to get my kids into new types of books when I do this. Barnes & nobles is great (with the large variety AND you can return books within reason, if in good shape if the book doesn't work out).

I don't live in northern VA, but I went to "Old Town Books" in Old Town Alexandria over winter break with family and the selection was terrific and the ideas from the staff, probably the best part tbh! If you wanted to make it a fun weekend activity....you could go to the bookshop and then grab lunch or a coffee/tea/hot choco/ect. and have a parent-child reading excursion.
