There are lots of great suggestions already. One that hasn't been mentioned yet is Mystic, CT which has a great museum for kids called the Mystic Seaport Museum. There is also a good aquarium.

It is actually one of the great things about the DC location - access to beaches, Bay, forests, state and national parks...pretty much anything from NC/VA/WVA/PA/NJ, parts of NY and DE. |
| Roanoke is another option with some fun museums, etc. |
I went to school in Slippery Rock (SRU). Just curious what you considered when adding it to this list. |
| We've done a lot of these (Philly, Lancaster, Williamsburg, Cape May) but one I haven't seen is Legoland up in Goshen, NY. Stayed one night in the Legoland hotel and one night in a Home2Suites then drove back down via the Jersey shore and stayed over there with friends/family. |
| You would have to get pretty lucky with traffic to get to Mystic CT in five hours (and live in the northern edge of the dmv). We liked the finger lakes, went to closest part and rented a house on a lake and did some hiking and hung out in the lake. |
| I'm adding Baltimore since nobody did... lots of good museums for kids. It's a nice long weekend. |
Completely snobbish. Not everyone can afford London for every trip. And frankly, I don't think London is worth the money nor travel time. But PP doesn't seem very creative nor fun so she can enjoy London. |
| Resorts like the Greenbriar, the Omni Homestead, and Primland. |
| Pittsburgh is such a great place to spend a long weekend. So much to do: lots of amazing contemporary art (Warhol and mattress factory), crazy kitsch (Randyland), outdoorsy stuff (kayaking, biking), green spaces, sports, science center, great concerts, antique cars and other Carnegie/Mellon treasures, lots of Pittsburgh / PA classic eats but also lovely fine and ethnic dining. That’s off the top of my head and just scratches the surface. |
For us, Baltimore has been great for a steady stream of day trips as my son has gone from toddler to tween, and the distance is fine to never have to bother with a hotel. Baltimore for little kids: pirate ship cruise, Port Discovery, B&O Museum and train ride Baltimore for 7-10yo— Science Museum and Aquarium, Christmas Village Baltimore for tween— Walter’s, Mt. Vernon, Fells Point, Kinetic Sculpture Race We’ve done the same with Richmond. It’s great to be able to get out of town for a day—and with sports and other commitments, that’s usually all we can do. |
Not op but curious where you’ve stayed in Pittsburgh |
